Hello everyone.
I have a question about muzzle wear on the M&P Shield.

I bought a new Shield 9mm from Cabela's around mid-December and put about 50 rounds through it at the range during the New year holiday.

The gun is all black.

I noticed that after the 50 rds, I could see wear at the end of the muzzle and can see silver where the round exited the muzzle. I was shooting CCI Blazer Brass ammo.

This is my first new personal handgun so this might sound like a stupid question.

Is this type of wear normal for the first firing or do I have an issue with the weapon.

My travel schedule has prevented me from going back to the range since I first shot it.

Thanks for any advice.

Normal stuff. The muzzle will not remain black and shiny. Thnere ar3e lost of powder and vaporized metal deposits there. You can clean it a bit, but it'll be like that again the first time you fire it. Wipe it down if there is enough "black sooty stuff that you might get on your clothes. Otherwise have no concerns.

Like the previous post said, it is probably normal wear. That being said, I would keep an eye on it. My Shield had silver streaks at the end of the barrel, and I assumed it was just the "left overs" from shooting. Then I noticed that the marks weren't really cleaning up and eventually had a rough, almost sharp texture at the end of my barrel. I took it in to a local M&P armorer to get his opinion, and he said it didn't look right, that the rifling process didn't seem to have been finished correctly, and to call S&W. I did that, sent the gun in, and got it back with a new barrel about three weeks later and no more problems.

A total non-issue...worry when it doesn't go BANG...

Thank you all for the replies. Will post a pic of the muzzle when I get home from travel.

Bozz10mm,

Here is a photo of the muzzle wear that I mentioned on the post. This weapon only had 50 rds put through it.

Mine doesn't look like that. I'd contact S&W. I have over 1000 rounds through mine.

I've noticed my barrel appears this way to. I have a glock 23 and xds that have no wear. On mine it appears the black coating has been scraped off in a few areas. Doesn't look like a big deal and will probably just watch it for now

This is how mine looks. Hopefully it's okay. Damn Internet forums make you worry about everything

Thanks every one. I sent a note to S&W. Will see what they say. I appreciate the comment and pictures.

Not On Mine

Bozz10mm,

I have about four hundred rounds through both of my Shields (9)
and not a bit of wear. You should call S&W CS and I'm sure they'll
replace the barrel on yours.
The one poster with an explanation from an armorer may be the
clue.
Otherwise, I think you've made a wise choice with the purchase of the Shield and you'll enjoy it I'm sure.

"Violence is seldom the answer, but when it is the answer it is the only answer".

I talked with S&W today about the barrel. They want me to send it in. We'll see what they say. Thanks for all the input.

Just a quick update on the Shield muzzle wear issue. I returned it to S&W around mid-March. They replaced the barrell. Just got it back. Looks great. Still need to get the range and see what happens.

I was shooting CCI Blazer Brass, 115 gr, FMJ standard range ammo. I don't think that should have caused the extreme muzzle wear. I have used it in other weapons with no issues.

Any suggestions on other range ammo?

Good to hear your Shield is fixed.

As far as range ammo, I used to buy somewhat by price but always factory and always brass.

That being said, it was almost exclusively Blazer Brass 115g FMJ until I decided to use a round that most closely imitated my carry round in "punch and recoil". Now I exclusively use Speer Lawman 124g FMJ. The Speer seems hotter than the Blazer and I can't tell the difference between it and my carry round.
