I was shooting yet again yesterday, another 100 flawless rounds down range. As my partner was shooting, I was noticing I had a 3 ft circle of brass, and it got me thinking how many times I've read about where your brass ejects too. Mine is between 2 & 3 o'clock with a consistent wear Mark on my deflector. Sounds like it's working we'll to me.
Only shooting lake city 5.56 XM193F , 55 gr.

Another NOOB question....when we talk about ejection angle and 3 or 4 o'clock, is that before or after it hits the deflector? Still trying to understand the ejection and "over gassing".

SSg...I am shooting the same ammo with same results. I put on a 3X9 scope and was getting about 2" 100 yard 5 shot groups. We have about 20 mph winds today. I am thinking on a calmer day and when I start reloading for the gun I should be able to reduce my groups. It's more fun shooting off hand with the open sights.

Cypher I believe 12 o'clock is looking straight down the barrel, so 3 o'clock would be 90 degrees to the right, and 2 o'clock a little forward.

West Texas...I believe you are right. so if it is ejecting at 4 oclock then it is hitting the deflector with every shot, correct?

That is why I have my question...the OP states his "is between 2 & 3 o'clock with a consistent wear Mark on my deflector". It would have to throw at 4 o'clock or later to hit the deflector, right?

When I said mine threw between 4o'clock and 4:30 in the other thread, that was before hitting the deflector. After it hit the deflector, I have no clue where it went.

Any AR I've shot hit the deflector . Also , how do you no it doesnt hit. That chart is a good gauge though.

Worst part about shooting in the military, there's some one always 3 ft to your left, as brass down the back of your shirt is no fun, that's a guaranteed chicken dance.

You are not examining ejection direction correctly. Watch the first minute or so of this video:

Awesome AR-15's in Slow Motion (2000%) - YouTube

See how the ejected case flips back mouth first, hits the deflector, then bounces off? The direction it bounces after hitting the deflector is your ejection direction. A lazy, slow action will just dribble the cases toward the rear. A very vigorous action will bounce the cases off of the deflector with more force and shoot them forward.

2:30 is the perfect ejection direction IMO, for a carbine with a deflector (Ejector Lump). However, as long as your rifle is functioning correctly, you don't need to worry about it.

If you are shooting outdoors, look at the pile of brass after shooting a magazine to determine ejection direction. Or, have a friend watch you shoot. If you are shooting indoors, with a wall right next to you, determining direction is more difficult.

Dragon88, Thanks again! My rifle works fine so I don't need to go monkeying around with it, but I just want to understand what is going on in there. Thanks for the explanation and the video.

I was shooting at an outdoor range with screen dividers, so the brass would hit the deflector and then hit the screen and bounce back towards me.

the last time I went shooting my sport threw all its brass into one pretty little pile to my right 8ft and back about 2 feet. all in a circle that a catholic school teachers yardstick would more than cover. I had a couple of those and they covered my backside real well. So it must be pretty good. the action feels extremely vigorous so I am adding a little over half an oz to my buffer just to see what it does. I hope to have a report this weekend but the parts may not be here till monday.
