I purchased the M&P 15 Sport II Optic Ready a few weeks back.
Great AR!! It comes standard with Crimson Trace Red/Green Dot Sight. Sight works fine with the rifle.
My question does anyone know what type of Rail Mount that is installed? As I am new to rail mounts on AR's I am not sure if this is a Picatinny Type? Need answer as soon s possible as I have found a great price on a better red dot with flip to the side magnifier.
Any help would be appreciated!

Welcome to the forum GP. Yes, the "rail" on your new AR is the classic "picatinny" rail. Zillions of picatinny rail-mounted optics await you. Depending on what you want, they come with assorted mounts at different heights, mounts with rings for conventional scopes, mounts without rings, etc. As you research the optics they should state what they actually include or don't include in the pkg.

Which optic / red dot and magnifier are you looking at?

No, it isn't. The rail on your upper is a picatinny rail. It is not M-LOK. M-LOK is a completely different specification for attaching accessories to the handguard, designed by Magpul.

A M-Lock picatinny rail would be a small section of picatinny rail that is attached to a handguard with the M-Lok system. Basically an adapter to allow picatinny accessories to be used on a firearm with the M-Lok system.

Yes, accessories designed for picatinny rails will fit on your receiver. Picatinny is a made to a specification so that you can be confident that they will fit.

Thanks for the Welcome and information. I am familiar with Picitinny. However, S&W states that this is MLock Picitinny Style, Do I have to use an MLock adapter ect. I feel kinda stupid as I have been aroung long guns a long time, but mostly bolt action

I'm reading / looking at the Sport 2 / Optic ready Ar and I find nothing regarding M-Lok. It has their version of a basic M4 handguard (round with no slots for m-lok accessories). Don't feel stupid. You got to learn somewhere / somehow and reaching out is the best step you can take. Picatinny, is Picatinny, is Picatinny which has zero to do with M-Lok in the sense that you speak of. Do you have literature, etc that mentions M-Lok? Is this your gun? M&P(R)15 SPORT™ II Optics Ready | Smith & Wesson

Looks like that model comes with Magpul M Lok handguards and...……...they also include 2 M Lok rails to attach to the handguard if you wish. That's the best I can decipher it.

I own a bunch of these S&W guns. Converted most to piston using Osprey. I always bought the basic optic ready versions as I strip all that other junk off. Never bought one with magpul furniture included.

What a lot of folks forget to remember that the the Sport II comes in several different models from S&W

What a lot of people do is fail to provide the proper model when they ask questions. You stated that you had a M&P Sport II OR, which is different from a M&P Sport II OR Magpul MOE M-LOK Carbine Length Handguard. Two separate models, to separate sku... The link you provided, M&P(R)15 SPORT™ II Optics Ready | Smith & Wesson is the basic OR, and it does not mention MLOK in the features at all...

So if you are saying that you have the one with MLOK, the rail that is part of upper where the optic would mount is not M-LOK picatinny... it is just picatinny. If your documentation refers to M-LOK Picatinny rail panels, it is addressing the adapters that are made for the handguard, not the forged rail on the top of the upper.

WOW!
Not here to argue or be trolled. The Optic sight that came with the the rifle is attached using an M Lock. The model ID number for my rifle is 12939. Attached is pic of box label

Welcome to the forum Gunnypapa. I am sure you will find your new M&P15 Sport OR a lot of fun to shoot. We look forward to a range report. :D

The optic that came with your model #12939 mounted using the Picatinny rail not MLOK.

The MLOK on your rifle is in the hand guard. The long oval holes are MLOK slots. This is where MLOK accessories can be attached. You can also use the M-LOK Picatinny-Style Rail Panel in the MLOK slot to attach picatinny accessories.

The M-LOK refers to the system to attach devices to the handguard. If your optic is attached via the rail that is part of the forged upper, that is not M-LOK. That is standard picatinny.

The S&W site states that the your rifle comes with "2” M-LOK® Picatinny-Style RailPanel Included".... that refers to a piece of rail that you can attach to the handguard via the M-LOK system to use items that would typically attach to a picatinny rail. It is an adapter, M-LOK to Picatinny.

The rail your optic sits on is not M-LOK. It is longer than 2", so obviously not the rail piece stated above. It is the same picatinny rail that is on my Sport, or any other M&P 15 railed upper receiver.

So, just to be clear, you have a standard picatinny rail that is part of the forged upper receiver where you mount your optic. You also have a Magpul M-LOK carbine length handguard, where you can attach things such as lights, bipods, sling loops, or other accessories using the M-LOK system, or you can utilize the 2" adapter rail to attach accessories that are picatinny to your handguard.

Not trying to argue, just trying to let you know the difference so you know what you have.

I found the reference to the "Picitinny "Style M Lock Rail. Please refer to linkBig Woods Goods
