M&P Sport vs M&P Rifle (sku 811000)

I have two sports...one unmodified and one modified. The one I changed the upper receiver on I did because I was able to get the upper receiver engraved with the Marine Corps Emblem and "The Few The Proud Marines" it and a free floating tubular handguard for $150. The other is stone cold stock as far as upper receiver. I still have to remember to close the dust cover on the one plus have yet to use the FA. I am honestly using the stone cold stock one more than the other.

I went on a hunt for the S&W Sport and was told by the first gun shop that they said to buy the first one I saw since everyone is back ordered. I hit three more places before I saw one and bought it. Love my wife, when Obama won re-election she sent me out to buy an AR.

I've not owned one of the sport models, but I've had 3 of the 811000 over the last few years.

The 811000 is well worth their regular pricing. As to whether there's enough difference to justify the extra price for many, I doubt it.

In hindsight, I wish I'd held on to the last one I had. The 811003 ORC is more suited to my taste. All great shooters. CD

I would get the one I can get, thats my thought

Same here. With what's going on,they are selling out like crazy or/and prices are getting nuts too. My LGS sold 27 AR's local in the last two days (it's a small location) and the population is low around here. The LGS also can't find any new ones. GRAB em if you see one. Snooze ya loose, prices are going up because of demand and I doubt if they will drop any soon. And when they drop again, they will still be higher than before now.

I changed the upper receiver, but have never used the FA.

I did it more for looks and as a way to familiarize myself with AR assembly.

Rojodiablo...I was thinking the same thing, does Porkqpine's wife have 2 sisters. I come with a paycheck already LOL

I really like my Sport....it eats anything I feed through it.

And thanks to the Prez and all the other idiot politicians, I would be willing to sell it....for $7500 cash. One of my better investments.

There are three major differences with the sport from all others first is the dust gate. If you want to carry your rifle for long distances without a gun bag then it would be prudent to have it if your range shooting then it is not a big deal. second is the forward assist. id you plan to be under fire yourself then the forward assist is a must however for recreational shooting any jam encountered should be worked on with the action openednot jamming the bullet forward in hopes that will solve the jam. third is the barrel lining on the models it is chrome lined and on the sport it is not there has been no definitive evidence i know of that states one is better than the other. so for most of us who are recreational shooters the sport is just fine and comes with sights unlike the OR model

My wife sent me out last Sat for my Christmas present when my LGS got in about a dozen M&P 15 OR models, I got mine when they opened the doors & by Mon they were all gone, not just the MP 15's but every AR they had in stock along with all extra mags & all ammo, & this is NOT a small gun store either. I'm really glad I got there when I did.
What a great wife I have ! Of course I got her the M&P Shield for her last birthday, so I guess we're even, haha

Well, I guess the internet got to you.;)
I'll help you with a few of your misconceptions: 1. FA. Forward assist was a bandaid for a rifle not vetted for the application of deployment it saw. The biggest setback was lack of a meaningful cleaning kit for the rifle. Had there been a decent cleaning kit sent with the rifle..... it would have worked pretty well even with the lousy powder they sent them into service with in the ammo. The famed SR 25, which is the advanced version of the original AR10 has no FA. And that is the rifle sent out with our troops for the meduim duty rifle. The LMT 308 used by the Brits and Canadians has no FA. Simply put, it is a way to seriously jam up a mildly jammed rifle. (As you stated. I can tell you; if you think a jammed up rifle at the range is a pain, then you state that a FA is a MUST for deployment....... A jammed rifle with unfriendlies around you is much, much more disconcerting than a jammed rifle at the range.);) While in basic they taught us how the FA works, they also taught us that if we ever touched that thing, we would be running an extra hump for failing to keep our rifles clean enough to avoid the jam knob.
The sport has a treatment to the barrel which is at the very least equal to chrome lining, and it is also proven to deliver better accuracy than a chrome lined barrel. Twist to twist, regardless of coating/ treatment, a 1-8 twist will give a broader range of ammunition able to be stabilized for downrange accuracy than the 1-9 twist. The 5R rifling has also proven itself in several different rifles as delivering excellent accuracy. The dust cover is a toss up. Many here were deployed carrying the AR15. Many of the older gents went to Vietnam with it. Many of the younger group went to the sandbox with it. I happened to ride a boat in Africa with it. (Dust cover or no, salt water does not fight fair with duty rifles!) Most would tell you that once you start shooting, that dust cover is open. And, truth be told, most never thought a second anbout closing it, simply because the rifle functions fine full of junk if it is lubed well.
But I will give you that a dust cover IS a nice feature, and is the one thing I felt the Sport could have had thrown in and it would have been nice- but really not necessary.

This is where Rojodiablo and I differ RockNWulf if you would look up at the top under the noticeable posts and read the thread "barrel specs for Sport" You will find that the melonite barrel on the Sport beats a chrome bore in every aspect except cost of production where the chrome costs more.
So there is definitive evidence to prove the melonite barrel better. :D

I bought a sport about a month ago for my granddaughter to shoot. This was to save wear and tear on my Colt SP1. She has really enjoyed shooting it and has done very well with it. I am very pleased with it and would recommend it to anyone and as has been said IF you can find one buy it as soon the you know what will hit the fan and it will not be distributed evenly.

Is there any substantial reason for picking the rifle over the sport? Also does the absense of a forward assist really matter?

The 811000 will give you a more mil-spec rifle (chrome bore, dust cover, forward assist). That is important to many but will probably be of little consequence on a range gun for sport shooters (most of us on this forum).
