M&P Standard trigger vs Apex trigger demo

Hey guys, Thought I would post a video of a standard M&P trigger vs one with Apex tactical sear and striker block installed. I used a M&P 9C with no mods and a M&P 9mm spec ops with the sear and block installed. Measured them on a Lyman trigger pull gauge and did my best to show trigger reset. Hope you guys like it, feel free to ask questions. I am NOT a rep of Apex, just thought it would be nice to share my experience. I think they are starting to slowly branch out to different S&W firearms as well...

They have some great parts, I did go to a professional for installation because I didn't feel like I could do what was necessary without messing up my gun/finish. Post up your results if you get it done

I have the Apex D/C (Duty/Carry) Kit installed in my FS M&P 40. It makes a sweet trigger. I first did only the Striker Block, That alone takes most of what people call a Gritty trigger away. What they are actually feeling is a sequence of events taking place. The 1st one being the trigger bar contacting the square edge of a stock shaped striker block. 2nd is the slanted trigger bar surface pushing the square edged striker block into it's hole. The Rounded Apex striker block cures both of these feelings since it makes those two events happen in one fluid motion.
The Apex sear moves the trigger break farther back so there is little or no over travel, which cuts down on how much you naturally move the gun when you pull the trigger. it's a sweet set up....

Also have an Apex sear and striker blocker in my Shield 40. I added an over travel stop to the trigger. I made a video showing the results of the trigger stop. I originally used the stock Shield springs and got a 4 pound 4 ounce pull. I put in a stock Glock trigger spring in place of the stock Shield trigger spring. Pull weight went down to 3 pounds 10-12 ounces. Just where I wanted it. Go to the 7 minute 50 second time frame to see the trigger action.

I am sure I will get comments about that being an unsafe trigger for carry. Improvements to a gun, that allow you to shoot it better, make it a better carry gun. The lighter trigger pull and trigger stop, on my Shield, helps me shoot it more consistently and have faster recovery. People should practice shooting their carry gun, so they become used to the trigger pull, recoil and recovery, and can shoot it accurately. What makes a safe carry gun is training and practice, and knowing your gun. Also if you follow proper gun safety rules, your finger should be off the trigger until you know your target and are ready to fire. The Shield has a manual safety. I carry with that safety on and practice flipping it off, with my thumb, as I draw my weapon. I might have a better grasp on my reactions in a sress situation, as I spent many years in LE.

I would agree that a long, heavy trigger pull is what an inexperienced shooter should have. This would also apply to those that have experience, but fail to practice often with their carry gun.

APEX has several trigger modifications available for a FS MP40. Please tell me which ones you have gotten, what you like, and do not like. I just bought a police return (carried much, shot little), and I want to improve the trigger to something better for competition use.

Apex has two kits and those can all have different pull weights.

Their top of the line is the FSS kit. It reduces the pre-travel, reduces a little sear pull, reduces over travel and shortens the reset.

They then have have their standard kits (DCAEK Kit and Comp AEK Kit). These kits also reduce a little sear pull, have reduced over travel and shorten the reset. They do not reduce any pre-travel.

Trigger pull weights are as follow:

FSS listed at 4 to 5 pounds
DCAEK listed at 5 to 5.5 pounds
Comp AEK listed as sub 3 pounds

The FSS could have spring changes to make the pull from 3 to a little over 5 pounds.

The DCAEK can be reduced to 4 to 4.5 pounds using the stock trigger spring and stock sear spring.

So you can see there are many variables to the kits regarding pull weight. The DCAEK pull could be reduced down to the Comp pull weights by installing the Comp springs, and vice versa the Comp AEK kit could be increased up to the DCAEK kit pull weight by installing the DCAEK springs. But why would that be done? You would buy the kit that provides the pull weight you desire from the beginning. But at a later time you could change the pull weight with a change of the springs, which currently run about $25.

Bob: Thank very much for the clarification. As a former free pistol shooter, I was looking for the smoothest trigger, not necessarily the lightest (although that would be good). The FSS kit seems to be what I should get.

Do you suggest any other modifications for competition work?

I installed the Apex AEK trigger and competition spring set on my m&p pro 9 long slide. It makes a world of difference. The feel of the trigger is much better than the rounded stock trigger. Being flat, it is easier to pull straight to the rear. My trigger pull now measures 2lbs 14oz.

I have read that the FSS kit is great. The new striker blocker, that comes with the kit, will smooth out the pull. I would also polish the sear face and mating face on the striker post. This makes the pull even smoother. I did not polish the striker post face when I installed the Apex parts. The Apex sear appeared polished. The more I shot, the trigger started feeling slightly gritty. I pulled the sear housing and found the sear face was scratched. Turns out the striker face was rough and it is made of harder material than the sear, so it scratched the sear face. I polished both and the pull has remained very smooth ever since. Apex states the FSS trigger pull is around 4 pounds. If you want less or more trigger pull, call Apex and see what spring combination they suggest.

I have considered the apex kit for my M&P9.

One question, though. Mine is the Pro Series model, and some of my friends have said I don't need to improve it because the Pro Series is more or less like the apex improved trigger.

Is this correct? Opinions?
