M&P trigger is noisy and rough

I purchased an M&P 45 about two hours ago and am as disappointed with the trigger as I could possibly be. I couldn't try it in the store (Bass Pro Shops) because they have these trigger locks and won't remove them. I had an M&P 40 that was slick as butter and had no reason to doubt the 45 would be different.

This is the worst trigger I have ever felt and I have an 88 Winchester. It actually breaks, during the slack take up, twice @ at least 3lbs and can be heard scraping and clicking across the room. It looks like the trigger bar has to go around a projection for some reason on the bottom of the slide and it has an indention that is catching big time. It is way worse than gritty...... it can be felt as a stop. Picture a pop sickle stick rubbing the threads on a reloading die. What is going on with this thing? Is this normal for a M&P 45. I don't want to have to send it back to S&W, but something is going to be fixed before I shoot this thing. Any help with this will be greatly appreciated.

I found a "fix" on another forum. Maybe it will help.

Your complaint is not unheard of. I bought one recently, it had just over 8 pound trigger pull, and very clunky sounding take up. I did not really care as my intention from the beginning was to install the Apex custom trigger sear and striker block which is most likely causing your crunchy trigger take up. My MP is now at 4 pounds 2 oz. and very smooth take up on the trigger. I would agree with you if you were to say it should not leave the factory this way, but they do. I would imagine if you complain and send it back to them on their dime they would make it better. I once sent them a brand new 1911 because it had a 5 pound 11 ounce trigger pull they paid for shipping both ways and I got a 4 1/2 pound pull. However they had advertised it between 4 and 41/2 pound pull weight.....

Thanks for the reply. I got rid of the noise and crunchy take up pull, but the final pull is over 8 lbs according to my gage. I think I will do the same thing and order an Apex trigger sear and striker block to see if that will work.

I had a 40cal Sigma with feeding problems and sent if back to Smith & Wesson twice. The third time they ended up buying it back. I don't get excited about sending things that should be working when it is sold back to the factory to get it fixed. That is a quality control problem that needs fixing in it self.

the trigger on my M&P40 was a little gritty when I got it but nothing serious. I dry fired it while I watched a movie one time and that (and a tiny dab of Militec-1 grease) fixed it nicely. The trigger on my M&P40c was good right out of the box.

I've bought guns from Bass Pro on occasion and thankfully haven't had a problem. I don't like that they won't remove the lock for you to check function, though. I can see where it would be a pain to remove the lock every time someone wanted to look at a gun, but I'd think at some point (maybe after the 4473 or something) they'd let you check it before you walk out with it.

I know Walmart is the same way, but there's a guy there that will take the lock off for me to check function if I'm seriously looking at buying something.

Every M&P I have purchased has the same feel as yours.

I have had two of my M&P's triggers done by Dan Burwell Gunsmithing. They are a completely different gun when he does his thing.

The only one I have not sent to him is my M&P Pro 9 which has the same crappy feel for the take up but breaks crisply @ about 4 pounds.

I would let CCI, Remington, Winchester,Fioochi, Federal etc do the trigger work for me one round at a time. Would also get a snap cap and dry fire the daylights out of it. In no time at all you will have a nicely broken in trigger and had some great training with it as well. Might work for you as well.
My M&p .40 FS has over 15,000 rounds downrange without a hiccup ever....just keeps on getting better and better.......

GrowR in theory I agree with you on pulling the trigger plenty will smooth things out a bit. However ammo is dang expensive if you don't reload. I think if a smoother lighter trigger is your goal the Apex Hard Sear and Striker Block Plunger is way cheaper, takes 10 minutes install on the sear. You might check the trigger bar where it contacts the SBP to see if it is burred and polish it a little. My FS MP 45 at 8.5 pounds most likely would not be to my liking even after 15k, but each must do what they must to reach their goal on a weapon. I did dry fire the 45 1500 times, that clunky chunky feel did not change that I could notice.....Good luck...The M&P is a great gun if you can get the trigger working as good as the rest. I have the FS 40 since they came out, something north of 10K, like you said it just keeps shoot'in.......

I really like my M&P45. How about S&W releasing a gun that doesn't need trigger work? It's absolutely insane.

I agree totally but it is what it is. I think if it would come from the factory with a reasonable trigger, they could not keep them in stock. I think the triggers on the MP are worse now then when I bought my FS 40 almost 4 years ago. That trigger came from the factory at 5 pounds 11 oz. and it was fairly smooth. My FS 45 had a really terrible trigger, the worst I have seen on an M&P pistol and I have handled quite a few as I go to a busy public indoor range every Tuesday.

It's been my experience ( with 3 M&P's) that the grittyness is all in the top end/slide. ( Field strip it and pull the trigger. Smooth as butter right?) Particularly in the striker block. Just pushing this in and out will tell you where most of the grittyness comes from. I've pull this part ( and striker itself) out of all 3 of mine and did some polishing per Burwells instructions. Works wonders.

The striker block plunger had a ridge around the top and a projection in the center where it looked like it was turned. Nothing smooth about it. The trigger bar had several small notches in the contact surface. The combination was a nightmare. Smoothed it all up and the trigger is quiet and fairly slick. Still has about an 8 Lb pull but it is better. I ordered the Apex sear and SBP today. From what I could do with the 8 lb pull trigger at the range, this pistol is going to be nice when I get the trigger weight down some.

I dont go to Bass Pro any more, I go to Cabelas since I'm not expected to 'check' my CC pistol at customer service there like Bass Pro.

Its hard to believe a store would expect people to buy a firearm without pulling the trigger a time or two. I have never been in a store that trigger locks everything. I think they would have to have some darn good prices to get my business with that kind of policy....the ones I have been to encourage trigger pull'in.

There are not many gunshops around here that carry anything but Glocks and I can't stand the grip on those things. Their trigger guard rubs my knuckle wrong. I would love to be able to go to a Cabelas store, but if you look at the locations of their stores it would be a two day drive for me. Something about the SE they just don't like I guess.

I have a M&P 40 took it in to my local gunshop to have a set of trijicon night sights installed, when the gunsmith brought the pistol back to me the first thing he asked me was who did your trigger work. That is when he learned about Apex tactical I told him I installed Apex's sear and striker block,he thought I had polished this and polished that, nope just a simple install of 2 parts and he could not believe the results.Do you care if I take the slide off and check out the sear? Then he got out his trigger scale and it broke at 4lbs 2oz.I think this gunsmith was on the internet checking Apex tactical out before I left the shop.So if you have a bad trigger on a M&P this is the best answer I know of it works great.

Apex's sear and striker block came in Friday. It will be in the hands of my gunsmith tomorrow. I can't wait to see the results.

My gunsmith stuck the Apex parts in my M&P 45 and the difference is like night and day. It is smooth and light. Haven't weighed it yet but it will come in around 4 lbs I think.

Thanks for the information about Apex. It saved a pistol from the back of the drawer and made a shooter out of it...
