Carry with compensator, flash hider or muzzle brake

I believe que only A1 Compensator ?

What is the difference between compensator, flash hider and muzzle brake ?

Thanks in advance

muzzle brake = compensator is meant to counteract the rifle's recoil and/or muzzle rise.

flash hider = flash suppressor is meant to eliminate or reduce the flash when fired - primarily designed to keep a shooter's vision from being blinded at night but can also reduce visibility of the rifle's location.

The M16A1 suppressor is a flash suppressor. The M16A2 compensator helps keep the muzzle down during BURST firing. They look a lot alike. The bottom vents of the A1 were closed to make the A2. (There are better flash suppressors on the market.)

The M&P15-22 needs no muzzle down help and the "A1" type need not be indexed and can use a straight lock washer, not peel or crush.

Thank you both

I understand what you say, but this is all very confusing

So why S&W announces A1 Comp?

S&W should say A1 Flash Hider or Flash Suppressor

I've no idea why S&W calls the M16A1-style flash suppressor an "A1 Comp."

But it doesn't surprise me as manufacturers have been calling flat-top ARs "A3" for 20 years.

The M16A3, of course, has the same fixed handle as the M16A2, and there's only the M4 and M4A1 (no A2 or A3) both of which have detachable handles other than the very early M4.

M16A2 (SAFE-SEMI-BURST) Fixed handle.
M16A3 (SAFE-SEMI-AUTO) Fixed handle.
M16A4 (SAFE-SEMI-BURST) Detachable handle.
