M&P45 converted to .460 Rowland

Seemed pretty reasonable to me, especially when you consider that it has a longer barrel to help it meet DNR requirements etc. A conversion barrel for a G20 is almost 200 bucks for the barrel alone IIRC.

Hey Everyone,
Is there anymore news on this? I'm considering getting a conversion for my M&P45.

I emailed Johnny Rowland with the same question. I explained that I might buy an M&P just so I could convert it. He replied stating that if I was going to buy a new gun anyway, that the Smiths had had magazine spring issues and that I should buy an XD to convert. I still might buy one to convert someday. He never specified the exact problem.

Interesting. I had not heard anything about magazine problems. I do agree that I suspect that replacing mag springs would probably help.

I agree. Whenever I am ready for the cartridge, I might buy a full size m&p 45 and convert it...as I carry an m&p 9c anyway. Maybe I would be able to become proficient faster via the familiarity factor... OR maybe I'll just get the mountain gun in 45LC instead...or BOTH! Ha.

Regarding a 460 Rowland conversion for the M&P......I have done one on a 1911 and it uses a 24# spring which is very hard to compress into the slide but is a requirement if you're going to use it very much. I am very happy with the conversion on my Springfield 1911. The Wild West Guns people do not do the XD conversion anymore due to problems they encountered with "performance". I suspect it beat them up extensively and WWG couldn't deal with the returns. The M&P will not be a viable platform, in my opinion, until you get a comp and a suitable recoil spring. The compensator is REQUIRED for the 1911 as well as only suitable guns are recommended. Go to Clark Custom Guns, where I got my kit and you'll get the list of acceptable 1911's for their kit as well as being able to get answers to questions. If Rowland is suggesting the XD platform, be aware that WWG dismissed that long ago as not viable. Of course WWG sells a lot of guns to Alaskan hunters/outdoorsmen who require a dependable gun for bear protection. If the XD wouldn't work in that environment due to whatever reason, why would you want it?

You might check with Wild West Guns Wild West Guns - Alaskas Largest Custom Gun Shop They have done quite a few of these conversions for bear guns here in Alaska. So far there have been good reports of how the guns work.
No connection to WWG just somebody who is looking to do it myself.

WWG doesn't do the Rowland conversion on the XD anymore. Too many problems is the feedback I got directly from Jim West. I'd be very suspicious of any conversion that has not been engineered and tested thoroughly. Clark Custom Guns makes their kit for the 1911, but only for specific 1911's. Go to their website for the list. I did my Rowland with their kit on a Springfield and it's just great. With the Comp the recoil is very manageable. If you're going to reload for it, be very careful and measure your powder precisely for every cartridge and stay away from max loads until you get experience with it.

I am not exactly sure where you are coming from Santefe66. This thread is 6 years old and info has changed since then. For the record since you are addressing me I have owned the Clark guns kit and didn't like it since it was heavy and awkward with the comp in front and it has long since been sold. If you go to Rowlands official site you will find they do in fact sell M&P as well as XD kits.
