The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Office just awarded S&W a contract to replace all their current duty sidearms with the M&P9.

The LASO has almost 10,000 deputies.

Guess who's not getting 17rd factory magazines anytime soon?

The rest of us.

I talked with an LASO guy at a training class recently and heard that they were goin with the M&P. I just assumed they were going to go with the .40.

I would bet you are right, availability will be severely hampered for some time.

Customer service rep told me last week, up to 8 months before all the backorders are filled.

They're issued 9mm now (147gr SXT), last I heard they were carrying Berettas (not sure about that though)...

Their new M&P's will be 9mm's...seems the big-big agencies (LASO, LAPD, NYPD) issue 9mm...of course CPD issues 9mm, but allows .40 and .45 so departments do vary.

My neighborhood (Borough near Pittsburgh, PA) issues G21SF's... I just found this out recently. it's a small town, makes me feel like I should be carrying my XDs45 more?! I mean if the police feel they need a .45...

If it goes like CSPD, they will upgrade their existing M&Ps and flood the market with very lightly used guns & mags.

My brother in law is a la county sherriff he said they are all getting m&p 9mm they already started getting some most officers I see carry there own right now.

Recruits have been issued the M&P for some time, though the dept did run out of M&Ps for a while and had to issue Berettas for several academy classes.

The M&P was an optional approved duty gun as well, so many deputies already started carrying it (I was carrying my personal M&P back in 2011).

To make you even more depressed about the mag situation...Each gun is issued with five mags.

I know some people do not care for them, but ProMag 17 rounders are in stock at Cabela's.

I have three and they have all functioned flawlessly so far, good enough for my caliber conversion on my full size 40. A little hard to seat the mag with the slide closed, but with it locked open they go right in without a problem. Work perfectly in my 9c as well, may just order some x-grips and use them for that gun since they seem to work with no problems.

That said, I am extremely glad I ended up going with the full size 40. Just ordered a bunch of used 15 round mags that should be here tomorrow.

This whole mag situation with S&W is REALLY making me consider going with another manufacturer for my next purchase, was thinking about a 5" M&P, but why bother if I won't be able to get more than the two factory mags for it.

Does California let their officers carry 17rd mags or do they make them carry the 10-rounders like they do their citizens?

Haha, what a funny idea. Commiefornia making their LEOs obey they same laws as their subjects err I mean citizens.

Gentlemen;
As I understand it, S&W is having their mags manufactured by Mec-Gar. And Smith is only 1 among many that do the same. Mec-Gar is just swamped, and you can't get them to respond to any communications right now about delivery dates. And they are quite tacky about it.
Buy what you can, where you can, and be happy you have some. I played bloody hell getting mags for my new Walther PPQ. Had to get them thru Earl's Repair service as Walther America didn't have a damn clue when they would get any. And they weren't cheap either. Not quite as expensive as 44Mag's M&P 9 full size, but almost. As much as I like my PPQ, I will probably sell it as I am not impessed with Walther America's customer service.
Anyway, it doesn't look favorable for M&P mags for the immediate future. Wish I would have held on to my 3 extra M&P 9 FS mags when I dumped the 9FS that wouldn't group. Thought the PPQ would replace it, but I do miss a nice M&P 9FS.
Stay frosty, my Brothers.

MP9 fs 10rd mags....arrgggg

When I bought my M&P9 it came with 2 mags. My problem is one of them had a feed problem, trying to frear it I bent the mouth of the mag., that leaves me exactly 1. I spoke to SW and got attitude, which surprised me. Because I am the land of the unfree, NY, I can only have 10rd compliant mags.
A month I can accept, 3 months I can deal with, 8 is unacceptably poor customer service.
I just bought a new 9mm and this whole issue has made me drop SW as my pistol of choice.
Very sad

I find all this very interesting. Two days ago I posted that my local store had a bunch of M&P 9mm mags. I said that I would buy some for anyone who asked. Of course they are 10 round mags. Only one person responded and he only wanted one.

What is the big deal about 17 round mags? If I needed a mag, and I did, I would buy what was available. I'm just surprised that no one wanted any mags after all this complaining.

I think most people are just not desperate enough to pay $43 or whatever plus shipping for a 10 round mag. I wouldn't even pay that for a 17 round mag. I'll just keep on waiting for some reasonably priced mags...almost 9 months and counting.

Very interesting.

Los Angeles County Sheriff's Office: 10,000 deputies X 5 mags per gun = 50,000 mags.

Has anyone considered the possibility that S&W has been accumulating guns and mags for this contract?

If I'm not mistaken, LAPD also allows .40 and .45, unless there's been a recent change. We are issued Glocks in 9mm also. With the current choices in ammo, it has proven to be quite effective. While I'm a .45 guy, I have no problem with the 9mm GDHP 124 +p we are issued.
