I'm sure this is a personal choice, but is there any reason to go with a Shield over a M&P9c and vice versa?

I've heard many say that the M&P9c carries just as well as the Shield, so pick the 9c for the extra ammo.

Discussed at great length here previously.

If the Shield's thinner profile didn't make a difference in carrying comfort, they wouldn't be so popular. You're right: it is a personal choice and you have to factor in your own preferences on comfort vs. capacity, etc.

Personally, I find the Shield much easier to carry IWB. I also have a full size M&P 9...same width as a 9c...and I don't like it IWB. I carry it OWB like a champ, but will not IWB carry a full size or compact. This decision rests upon your carry system, your body build, your preferred clothing style, your preference for capacity, etc. Lots to consider.

I skipped over the 9c: I own a Shield and a full size 9.

I have both the Shield and the 9c and carry both. They shoot similarly, so not much of a difference there. I guess after that it's just personal preference. It may not seem like much, but that little difference in thickness makes the Shield almost disappear carrying IWB. If round count is more important to you, then go with the 9c. I would say I carry probably 60/40 with the nod to the Shield.

I'm curious since I just got a shield. Anyone carry it as a backup?

I'm comfortable carrying the fs 9 and the c and rotate them fairly evenly... With maybe slight prefernce to the FS.

To me it's the weight that makes the difference. On my cheap scale the compact is 32oz loaded, the shield is about 10oz less. I also think the 9c shoots better, and as it is heavier that makes sense. Both are fantastic, but the 9c is in my holster more than my Shield.

If I could only have one, I'd have the 9c.

I for some 2+ years had it all figured out...(I'm good at getting things all figured out)..My Glock 26 10 rounder was the most perfect IWB cc I could ever want or ask for....Then I discovered the Shield...It was so light and thin and just disappeared IWB at appendix. So I had to go to Lowe's and get a new figure it outter as I figured out my old one was broke....

Glock now in bedside table, my shield is my American Express card...never leave home without it. Bigger to me does not mean better.....But as everything...it's personal choice and what works for one will not work for others and vice-versa .....

I know this is the S&W forum, and at the risk of sounding like a heretic, have you palmed an XD9 Sub Compact Mod.2?

I love my Shields, but sometimes I want more ammo. The 9c will be fatter, but then again so is the XD9.

The Sub Compact XD9 Mod.2 felt way better to me, so that's the one that followed me out of the gun shop.

The cool things about guns is you don't have to be faithful...;)

Here's why I'm thinking of getting a Shield. I have a Glock 19 and a 26. The M&P9c is in between the 19 and 26. I'd probably just rather carry the 26 than the chunkier 9c. Having the single stack would be nice.

However, S&W is giving away three mags with a purchase of an M&P. That makes the 9c the same price as the shield.

Do all Shields come with two mags?

if you a man get the 9c... i made the mis stack of getting the shield first.. now i wish i would have waited... the 9 c does it all.. the shield capacity max out a 8,, where as the 9c max out at 17,,,,, nuff said .. 9c could be your CC or go to war gun....comes with a 10 or 12 rds mag .. and it the same size a the shield..unless you are a women...then it might be a few cm thicker

Good question!

If you want something that carries easy with most kinds of clothing & carry systems, slim & comfortable, Shield takes it hands down.

If you want more gun, more rounds, M&Pc or almost any of the leading Tupperware compacts, G19, XDM etc.

In fact, for the size of the M&Pc, I can carry a mod.2.45 that is practically the same size dimensionally.

So to me, the Shield is a great SD gun that I can wear all day IWB, with just a tee shirt and hardly know I have it on.

I do own an M&Pc.40, I just don't use it all that much.

Another thing to consider, more than one gun is almost a necessity.
If for some reason, you need to use your gun for SD, it may be confiscated during the investigation so having something else "on hand", to me, is a good idea.

So maybe 2 Shields?

I have the 9c. I added Apex parts to it. It is by far more accurate then my 2 5" pros and CORE. Plus it can hold up to 17 rounds. Conceals fairly well. Wearing it with an N82 holster, very comfortable. Bad side, fully loaded with 12+1, it weighs almost 2 lbs.

It is for this reason that I also own and carry a Sig p938. It is about 13oz. lighter loaded. It might not sound like a lot, but trust me, it is. I find myself carrying the Sig more and more.

Well, there you go, OP. If you're a man, get the 9c. Shields are apparently for women...

...Or for men with gotta-have-the-tallest-truck self esteem issues. ;)

I did sound sexist didnt i...lol
Wasnt trying too. But i know most guys like capacity one of the biggest points for going simiauto in the first place. . Soo for the same size gun with the same level of concealabilty go 9c.... my wife and must of her friends just want something to feel safe 6-8 round does that nicely. .. even tho the 12 round mag the 9c occupies the same space.. .... keep in mind i have the shield soooo i was talking about myself as well.. but i do plan on getting the 9c first chance

I bought the Shield specifically for Front Pocket carry and it's been doing a fine job in that capacity for 3yrs now.

In situations where I might not be able to Pocket Carry (few and far between) and have to IWB (or OWB) carry, I go Double-Stack... XDMc or G19.

Out to 30'-40', my accuracy and grouping with the Shield is just as good as my XDMc and G19. 45' and further, my groups open up just a bit with the Shield. But then... The Shield is intended for Self Defense distance. :)

I have neither but I have tried both. The grip on the shield's just a bit on the small side for my extra large hands, making it difficult for me to shoot with any kind of accuracy.
The 9c fits my hand better and that makes it easier for me to shoot.
Also, if and or when I switch to a semi for concealed carry, it's gonna be for a higher capacity.
The 9c's my "when I get my first plastic 9mm gun."
