"M" stamp conversion for L frame

I have a 586 and a 686, both no dash that have not been back to the factory for the M stamp modification.

Just interested in the problem this modification corrects, and what they do to correct the issue.

Anyone know who pays the shipping to the factory and return?

If I recall correctly, it had to do with primer flow back into the firing pin hole in the breech face with high pressure loads. If the primer flowed back into the firing pin hole, it would lock up the revolver.

I believe the fix involved a replacement of the firing pin and firing pin bushing. It is an important fix.

Hammer nose (Firing pin) and bushing. The Factory use to pay round trip but I'm not sure anymore. I have a -1 which I never sent back. I shoot it a lot but not with magnums.

I have a 581 no dash, without the modification. I have shot hot Rem. and Fed 125gr factory loads through it without any primer flow or cratering. Shot some hot handloads with Fed primers with no problems. It ain't broke so I am not going to send it in to be fixed. According to S&W, it wasn't all no dash and -1s that had the problem, (only a few) and part of the problem was some soft primers in hot factory loads.

I have a 586 no dash without the M stamp and it has been used with mild loads for more than 10,000 rounds.

I purchased a M586 when they first came out in the early 1980's. I fired a few thousand rounds through it without any problems what so ever, but admittedly, most of the rounds I shot were not hot. I did wind up sending it back for the Modification, and everything is still fine. If they are still willing to pay for it, I would send it back for the Mod.

I have a 686 no dash, haven't had any problems until recenlty when I loaded up some 357s, 158grn SWC pushed by 14.5 grns of 2400.. It jamed several times and I had to fire the rest of those rounds through my 28-2.... I will be sending mine back soon..

Note: I was using CCI small pistol primers. (It was all that was available at time)

I sent my no-dash snubbie in for the mod. S&W will send you a shipping label, and pay for shipping back to you. They did NOT stamp my 686 with the "M" indicating that it was modified. It costs you nothing to have the work done.........

Just curious how recently did someone return their L frame for the modification (and did they send you and ARS label to pay for shipping the revolver to S&W)?

My L frames are back from S&W. 2 weeks door to door. They did replace the bushing and hammer nose on each revolver. They did M stamp them and test fire them.

They emailed me the shipping label at no cost.
