So, I recently read that SW never made the Model 10 HB in a 3" round butt version, except for export. I could swear I've seen these and I've been actively looking for one for years now. Am I on a fool's errand? Do these even exist, or should I give up and just look for a 3" M13 instead?

Ummmm, huh??

Take a look at this thread....

Ah! So, they DO exist! I knew I wasn't crazy. I could have sworn I saw a few back in the early 1980's being carried by some detectives (I was a sheriff's explorer back then). I've been trying without success to find one of these, but I'm handicapped by the fact that I'm in California, so I can't buy online, and have it sent to CA unless it's on the "roster" and the fact that they are so rare. I have plenty of J-frames and several 4" K frames, but this one is elusive.

There was also a 2 1/2" round butt Mod. 10. Now if you really want rare, there actually were some 3" pencil barrel Mod.10's in the '60's.

There are 2, 3 inch heavy barrel square butt model 10’s on Gunbroker now. Item number 1114099987 and item number 1115787868. They both were proofed in Germany.

If you find one, make sure it's a legit RB. I converted one of the 3" Aussie Sq butts Buds Gun Shop was selling a few years back. Ended up getting rid of it, so I know at least one conversion is out there. It wasn't a great job and ran it with Pachs that completely covered the grip frame.

Well, at least now I know the mythical beast exists. When I went on the job I was issued a 4" SW Model 15. I ended up buying a 3" model 65 that I could use on and off the job. Unfortunately, they ended up switching us to the Beretta around 1991. But I always loved the revolver. Now that I'm retired, I'm looking for one, but they are so hard to find, especially in California. When you do find a possible candidate, they are usually in rough shape, and they want a mint for them. I'm currently carrying my M36 dated 1967. Rode as my back-up gun for three decades. Now if I can just find the 3" M10, or I guess M13 I'll be a happy man.

Thanks for the pics and comments. I gives me some hope that I might find something eventually.

I own one. It was a special order, part of a 50 Year Commemorative put out for the California Correctional Peace Officer's Association (prison guards union). A total of 4,000 pieces. 2", 3", 4", SB, RB, Nickle or Blue. It was the largest private party sale S&W had ever made at the time. On paper they were sold to our Operations Officer, Tim Mahoney. (I know, I had a modest level of involvement in the program.)

THAT is precisely what I've been looking for. That is a beautiful revolver my man! Whatever you do never sell it! I'll find one eventually. It's just the "roster" in California makes things hard. Sure wish SW would make a run of these again. Even the newer ones with the lock would be okay with me. I know they'd sell like hotcakes.

Here is one in Nickel...

Here's mine (also a 10-8)...

Without going to the book and checking, I seem to recall that at the 10-8 timeframe these were special order only - not a regularly cataloged item, but they were later.

Adios,

Interesting. I have a Taurus 82 three inch that has German proof marks. Lanyard ring as well. Wonder who was using three inch 38s in Germany?

About a year or two ago I bought a 3” M10 RB from one of the common surplus outlets. AIM Surplus possibly. It is a nice gun. Imported back into the US so it is marked with the import stamp. Not the best looking condition but good enough for a truck gun. I am happy with it.
