M1917 markings and identifications; Commercial vs. Military

Great Score! I'd a been on that there one like a duck on a Junebug, right from the git-go. I have yet to see a sideplate replaced that didn't somehow give itself away. I was tempted to pick up a very nice Smith awhile ago that was great in every way except for the fact that someone had engraved something that was important to them on the sideplate. I knew I could obtain another sideplate but hesitated because I didn't think I could ever get the fit "right."
I was also curious as to whether or not there were any stampings on the left side of the grip frame which usually indicates a return date to the factory, representing work done which could explain subtle differences noted in pictures. You did very well, they are special revolvers.
