M1917 trivia..//update w/ pics....

Well, did not get to meet with my photographer... so I had to make do with my 'PhD' camera. ('Push Here Dummy')

A tiny bit of wear at the front edge of the front sight blade. Another tiny spot of holster wear top-left of frame. Penciled s/n matches on inside of grips. Sideplate screws completely unmolested. All other s/n'ed parts match.
S/N of 2103x puts it as a pretty early M1917 I suppose.

So, help me out here - when did production start? At what s/n did they start with?
And ya'll have got me a mite confused - what's the deal with the 'grooved' hammer? I've looked and looked, but I see NO grooves on the hammer sides. Not even sure what I should be looking for.
The hammer and trigger on this ol' girl are STRONG color-casehardened. I detect no grooves anywhere visible.

At least for this ol' guy, and I don't get out much.... this is as good a M1917 as I've run up on....

S&W M1917 production started in October, 1917 at serial number 1. Your gun with serial number 21038 was delivered to the Government during the week of February 9, 1918.

The grooves are on the sides of the hammer around the hammer axles.
