M28 Question

I looked at a M 28 no dash today and a couple things struck me as odd. I'm wondering if something is amiss. Its a 4". The yolk is marked M-28 with a SN S 2127xx. I figure this is 1960-1961 or so. There was no SN on the bottom of the grip frame. I looked pretty close and couldnt see any sign of one having been removed. It was well patina'd and smooth. No machine marks or grinder marks. It was a 4 screw and had diamond magna stocks.
The condition looked pretty good, lock up was tight and no end shake. I guess I expected a 5 screw that early and certainly expected to see a SN on the bottom of the butt, however I am far from an authority. Any thoughts?

The serial number is appropriate for 28 no dash 4 screw.
The missing serial number on the butt would turn me away regardless of price or condition.

Wouldn't an S prefix gun also have the SN in the ejector rod shroud? Maybe S&W just forgot to put the SN on the butt. Flundertaker, does the serial number show up anywhere else?

The serial number in the Shroud went away with the Model Marked Guns...For example from Pre 27 to 27-0

S&W has been putting the s/n on the butt frame since forever. Is it possible they just overlooked it on this one?

Well, never say never, but I would keep my hands off it.

In several years of doing gun shows I have seen ONE gun that was offered to us with the serial number removed. We brought over the local police and the guy was arrested. Found out later the judge released him because he did not speak English. He spoke English.
