I have a 1967 M28 that suffers from "trigger kick." When pulling the trigger in single action mode, the trigger catches the hammer on its way down. The revolver does not have any push off. I've replaced the rebound spring with a factory standard one, and tried removing the trigger stop. Neither has solved the problem.

What is causing this? It doesn't look like someone has done an action job, and, like I said, it doesn't suffer from push off. I checked the strain screw and it looks unaltered.

I'm willing to try some stoning myself, IF I think it's within my ability. I've done some light stoning (following the Jerry Miculek video) on some other revolvers with good results. But this may be outside of my limited skills.

Any suggestions on how to fix it?

Thanks,
Sam

Sometimes the DA sear can catch the trigger as the hammer is falling. You can check that out with the sideplate off, no mainspring. Cock the hammer, then pull the trigger just enough to release the sear and watch the hammer/trigger interface as you lower the hammer manually.

The repair most likely involves fitting a new sear. It's likely that the adjustment of the existing sear (too far out on recovery) is allowing it to recover to a position that is interfering with, or lightly striking the bevel on the trigger as the hammer goes forward after release.

Sometimes a relief cut or "second cut" as S&W calls it, can be made at the end of the sear to help with this issue, it will depend on the condition of the sear in your particular revolver. Due to wear and tear and the age of the gun, it may just need a new replacement to be fit.

Have you checked your trigger pull with a gauge? Just curious as to the SA pull rate. The reason I ask is that sometimes, very light SA pull rates can contribute to this issue. The SA should be about 3 pounds.
