somebody has told me that S&W has the pistols made in Spain.
Shipped to USA they are offered as made in USA. Both of my M41 are built in the seventies and are wonderful guns, good to look at, reliable (with the ammo they request) and very precisely shooting.
Does anybody know if the Spain story is correct?

Oh yes, it's well known. In fact all S&W's are made in other countries, mostly China. It's somewhere on the internet. ;)

Of course, the same internet tells me Model 41's are currently made in an S&W plant in Houlton, Maine.

Yeah. And guns sold at Walmart are all rejects that flunked various makers' quality control standards. After all, they all have thousands upon thousands of rejects, and where better to sell them than one of America's largest retailers of firearms?

Well, no...M41s have always been made in the USA. :)

The only ways this story might have happened are - someone mistook a pellet or non-firing replica as a real M41, or somehow confused it with the Brazilian S & W association of the last century. Of course, a few S & W were previously assembled in Canada in the past too...

I've been thinking about this, and there's really no reason in the global economy that 41's couldn't be made in Spain, or somewhere else. Except for the fact that the mostly conservative gun buyers in the world's largest legal gun market (USA) probably wouldn't accept them.

Magna's Steyr Austria contract assembly plant puts together Jaguars, BMWs, a Mercedes vehicle, and the future Toyota Supra. Modern machinery is great at building precision parts; quality of materials and assembly is largely a combination of management decisions, and what consumers are willing to pay.

Looking at new 41's, Consumers aren't willing to pay what it costs for skilled polishers. If they could be assembled in Spain or Portugal for the same cost but a better finish, would we accept it? I don't know, but I doubt it. Bergara in Spain builds barrels for a bunch of manufacturers, and has started selling completed rifles. I've never seen one, but they seem to get good reviews.

The Browning High Powers made in Belgium and assembled in Portugal are just a little less aesthetically pleasing than the older ones made and assembled in Belgium, but in operation they may actually be a little better.

Thats along with the seconds ammunition and TVs that failed QC.

Also,, they hate to ride in the car, if I use the passing,,,,,, LANE!!,,,

A possibility is that the individual saw an S&W 41 with Spanish proof or import markings either in Spain or returned to the US, and assumed it was made in Spain. S&W 41s from England, Australia, Germany, etc. are seen from time to time. I do not have any from Spain - yet!

You just never know what may cross your path one of these days Thom.

I have never been to Spain but according to the band Looking Glass the finest silver came from the North of Spain.
