M41???

Hi semi guys, got a couple of questions for you. A friend bought a used M41 last Sat. at one of our local gun shows. The serial number starts with 78xxx and it has a 7" barrel with the muzzle break. It does have the cocking indicator.
He read that the barrels with the break should measure 7 3/8" but says this one measures right at 7". He is just wondering if this is normal or maybe the barrel has been changed or what?
Also was wondering about what year 78xxx would come from?
I do not know much about the M41s and reading the SCSW did not help much.

If the Brake is removed a 3/8" nub protrudes. Thus 7 3/8". The 78XXX is in the 1967-8 range but for "ship date" would be from Jinks historian for S&W
