Hello all. My LGS has a used, 1911 in .45. It's somewhat heavy, I believe all stainless. Asking price is $450. I've looked at it twice, and if my somewhat fallible memory is correct, it's stamped '4606'. I can find no reference to a model 4606. Has anyone heard of a '4606'?

If it is a mis-stamped 4506, it would not be a 1911 but would be a heavy, stainless 5 inch barrel single stack pistol.

I agree with all the other members' replies - there was/is no such pistol manufactured by S&W and was wondering if you could forward me your local gun shop's phone number so I can call them.

Do you recall if it had the adjustable rear sight with the ss "ears"?

Thanks.

If that were a 1911, the asking price would be twice that in good condition. You probably are looking at a 4506 - an excellent 45 acp handgun in its own right.

I agree, I was mistaken when I stated it was a 1911. The rear sight is very large. I'll supply more detail after I pick it up. Thanks again.

I picked up my 4506 last week and ordered recoil springs, mag springs, mag followers, and a guide rod assembly from S&W. Field stripped it, cleaned it, and installed the new components. The recoil spring I ordered is standard and is 2 inches longer. There is only 1 guide rod offered for the 4506 and it's about an inch shorter. While the old guide rod used to fit flush at the frame end under the barrel, the new guide rod sits back into the frame about an inch. I'm thinking this is just an esthetic issue, but it looks weird. Any suggestions???

Are you kidding? I hope that you kept the original guide rod. Your new one will not work on that gun. It is the wrong part.
Why did you feel the need to replace so many parts on this gun?

No, not kidding. Recently bought the gun. As it was shipped more then 20 years ago, I thought replacing the recoil and magazine springs was prudent. I ordered the guide rod at the same time. I did in fact keep the old guide rod. Looking at the SW site, it specifies the same guide rod for the M 4506, M 745 and other models.

Sounds like you got a guide rod for a 4566 which has a 4 1/4" barrel. It will not work in your gun. The recoil spring replacement is a good idea as these came with two, one for standard loads and one for lightweight target loads.

Well, spoke with S&W Customer Service on Monday. Explained the problem, he said he'd take care of it. Received a guide rod of the proper length in the mail today.
