Since you guys are so knowledgeable about Smiths and all, thought I'd ask. Just picked up a nice nickel 6" Nickel M57 serial # N308723. I'm curious as I'm not finding a possible build date via the norm googling it, I'm guessing early 80s? IDK Thanks

 
Thanks guys, older than I thought. Love-n this one. just something about the .41 mag being a good shooter
 
To those that shoot this Model, whats your go to ammo? I'm looking at all sorts, kinda leaning towards the Winchester 175 gr. or those in the 180gr. range. thinking less weight less kick but more velocity IDK 210 seems a bit big. Maybe not. ;) did i mention I like this revolver just something about N frames that fit my hand.
 
Great looking nickel.......blue ones hold their own too.

No to both. The Football cutout was to provide relief for extraction. The earliest Targets were always getting hit by the spent rounds being pushed out by the extractor star, which caused damage to the wood. The Football relief was added to eliminate the problem.

Later, when speed loaders became common, the full cutout (shown in moralem's post) replaced the football. It happened approximately in the late 1970s and early 1980s, depending on the frame size. There was, as usual, a phase-in period.
 
As odd as it may sound I actually prefer the Blue to Nickel or Stainless, but when this one showed it's head at the right time, I had to grab and run. ;)

Thanks for that clarification on stocks.....I figured mine were not football style, but I am one of those people who just can't visually discern what others readily can.

LAX Ammo, 210gr. 1000FPS, 52 cents per round. Clean shooting, they frequently have free shipping. 1st time customer is free shipping. Recoil? Some but I can manage it.

I tell ya I've seen rose wood grips before, but these are such a perfect fit with this nickel, just the right color tone

When I carried a M58 as a service revolver, I used W-W Silver Tips. IIRC the bullet weight was 210gr ?

Could someone post a photo of the " Football" cut out of S&W grips ?
 
Wow. An excellent 57, nickel finish, P&R, TTT, RR & WO I'll bet. What's not to love?! Congrats.
Sounds like your 1st .41, so be foreforewarned, these are dangerously addictive. I fell into the 41 cult many years ago and the first thing I realized was: you are far better off making the ammo for them. From mild 44 spl target to snake shot to full house, hard cast Keith hunting ammo - there's just less of it around. I think there were fewer 41's made than 38, 44 or 45 so the ammunition is less plentiful and seldom discounted. I have had several 41's but all snub and SA. Then, a while back I found a full target 8 3/8" at a good price & grabbed it - just because I didn't have one. I'll wager that you find yourself doing the same thing from now on.

Oo just look at that.. love the grips. Yea have a feeling I'm hooked. I had a 29 back in the 80s, it was ok, never really brought it out much then was offered a fair price, so let it go. then I felt after shooting my M19 I fit N frames better, It's a great revolver, 357s are cool and all, but something was missing, so told myself if and when. Wa- la.

That's a beautiful handgun. I love those grips. Shine that nickel up with Rn wax and it will look like a mirror. As far hand loads go, I'm running 210 gr Hornady JHP over 19.9grs. of H110.
Your 57 can handle it. Target load running 210 gr SWC over 16.0 grs. of H110 it's a little more pleasant. I'll attach a pix of my 57s, stocks are not as nice as yours. These's a better picture of the nickel piece on here some where. Again beautiful handgun.

Can't beat $130 for a can of 250 rounds. I buy as much as I can when I can. It is new manufactured ammo from their L.A. plant. And when they have free shipping makes it that much more attractive.
