M58 value needed ( pic )

Hope I’m in the correct forum. I have an opportunity to buy a model 57 ( correction Model 58). It is nickel plated; walnut grips, it is pinned, and has the box. I have only seen one picture of it. They are asking $700. Is this reasonable?

I paid $600 for one several years ago from a forum member.

Less for blued ex-police guns showing lots of wear and possible
mechnical work.

Haven't seen a 58 in any condition for sale for a while.

The way 58s are going it could easily be worth $700. It even has the right grips! My concern would be the condition of the finish. If it's better than it looks in the photo or can be cleaned up, I'd jump on it. Wave 6 c-notes under the guy's nose and see if that'll do it.

I passed on the last one I saw (blue about 85-90%) because it didn't have the right grips, and they still wanted $600.

So yes, I think it is, and if you can get it for 6 you've got a bargin.

The 58's in my neck of the woods have been going north of that price....last one that I saw was blue (rough) and they wanted 800 and would not take any less. I understand that there were fewer nickle guns made primarily because police agencies did not want to pay any more than they had to for service guns. They don't make them like that anymore. I just recently found 2 58's thanks to the kindness of the forum members here....I would not sell either one (unless you offered just stoopid money for them ).

Let us know if you pick that one up....if you pass, I'm sure that someone here is looking a nickle 58.

I'd like to get it for 600 but I'm pretty sure that won't fly. This is one of the many guns a friend's father is selling for his friend's widow. I already bought 6 guns from him. He was asking 650 for it and when he found the box, he raised the price to 700. He said told me that the gentleman who passed away bought this gun last and paid $1000 for it.
I don't doubt it but just because he paid so much for it doesen't make it worth that much. I will look at it in person this week and maybe offer him 650 for it.

I am low on gun funds right now anyway, I bought another gun safe this weekend. I need to sell my SA 1911 to help fund it.

If you get it for $650 Great, but $700 aint too bad. I would but at $700 no questions. You may be surprised at the condition as nickel guns are hard to photograph. Around me if you find one for under $800 is a deal.

you get the box and the PC magna stocks.....to me, it is a $700 gun, but I have a 58 fetish....
I paid more than that for mine without the box, blue steel....
I would scoop it up for that price

Nickel is extermely hard to take good shots of and can be a very durable finish. Would have to see more pics with it cleaned up to rate it's finish. Nickel can be polished up but only so much. Is the action and lock up in good shape?

They don't make the 58 these days. It is a great revolver in a really nifty caliber that's good for plinking all the way up to elk/bear hunting with the right load. The .41 magnum is my all time favorite caliber and a model 57 was my first S&W back in 77. The first 58 I owned had a excellent trigger and was a very accuate revolver, even with the fixed sights. If you're after a 58 it should perform very well. I would not hestitate buying it at $700.00 and definately at $650.00. Fewer of the shiney models were made and most 58's have been selling at a high price here lately. You have to reload and shoot a .41 mag to appreciate it's abilities.

Sold the first one in 85 and just traded for a 1964 vintage 58 in 98% condition to replace the one I sold out of stupidity.

I just won a set of RCBS carbide .41 dies on eBay. Been loading for 44 spl, 44 mag & 45 colt for years so this will be no problem.

I'm also looking to trade for a .41 blackhawk. The gentleman who has it has been out of town & hasn't had a chance to send me pics of it yet. Crossing my fingers that this trade works out. Two new (to me) .41s will be a sweet pre christmas present!

If you do buy it clean out the innards and relube it. Will feel like you did a trigger job on it afterwards. Hope you get both of em! I like 8 grains of Unique and a 210 gr. LSWC. Very accurate and mild load.

I turned down an offer of $900 for my NIB nickel 58 this summer. There are very few for sale ,blue or nickel,in nice condition with original box and papers. Yours at $700 looks to be a GREAT deal. I would not balk at the price one bit. Again, there are very few 58's let alone really nice ones for sale nationally.

$700 for a in the box nickel gun that looks like it is in very nice condition...you won't loose any money that is for sure. A NIB nickel sold on GunBroker just acouple of weeks ago for $1475.00 Last week there was a mint one in box with a BuyNow of $1250 and it sold with the Buy Now... If the paperwork is in the box and maybe even the cleaning kit BUY IT...

And Sporsterguy....they are making the 58 again...it is the 58-1 with the IL...blue and nickel, the wholesale is in the $700s...

8.0 grains of Unique with any cast or jacketed 210 is an extremely accurate target load...hits 950+- from a 4" and duplicates the original 210 lead Police Load...

It also usually shoots to POA with the 58s fixed sights..

I had told myself 700 was my limit. Going to look at it this morning, pull the grips if he'll let me to see if they are numbered to the gun. The only way I can see giving him 800 for it is if it is unfired. If it has everything in the box, and looks unfired, I guess it will be worth it. Just rubs me the wrong way that he keeps raising the price on me.

But I guess its kinda like buying a used car from a salesman you don't like. If its a good deal, you will never have to see him again.

What are some sure signs it is an unfired gun?

Sounds kind of shady to me....The first time he pulled that line of garbage would be the last time we spoke about business....

I hope that he just forgot, and that he honors the original deal.

Looked at it today; perfect nickel, no rings on the end of the cylinder. Fired very little I would guess. Stocks were numbered but not to this gun's serial number. Grey S&W box, correct label for this gun. warranty card was the only paperwork besides the brown S&W wrapper. Almost too perfect; possibly a refinish job. Just didn't feel right, especially with the way he was being screwy with the price. I decided to pass at $800. He said if it didn't sell at that price, his dad was going to give it back to the widow of the guy he was selling it for.

on a separate note..I found a pre M30, 4 screw, nice blue, diamond grips, 3" barrel for $400 plus tax. Will go back next week when I have some cash & get it.

tell this guy to pound sand if he upped the price like that on a multiple return customer...... pass it on to everyone you know locally. There aren't many nickel pistols like that around, but you can find a dandy blue 58 for $450-$600 and be none the lesser equipped.

Bummer and I would be ticked also. He would never see another penny again from me after pulling a stunt like that.

Had a local dealer who also has a pawn shop that I worked with for 5 years and paid him good money for many transactions. Tried to ship a revolver through him and he wanted $125.00. Told him the price was ridiculous and I'd be taking my business to a local husband and wife. He wouldn't budge and neither would I. Great move and send lots of friends their way and warn other folks not to deal with the pawn shop rip off artist.

Word of mouth advertising goes a long ways.
