M610 Question

I have a guy locally that has a 610 for sale with an unfluted cylinder. I tried to do some quick research but it doesn't look like a gun that surfaces much. Are these kinda rare or just an un-wanted model? Gun seems to be in fairly decent condition. Has a fiber red front sight, not sure if that was standard. This one has a 6" barrel. Price seemed a little high at $900, but maybe that's because they don't seem to trade hands often.

Just slowly building a small collection of S&W revolvers. Is this one worth paying $900 for? I know, that is a very subjective question. Just don't want to let it get-away if it is actually worth that kind of money.

900 is about the going rate these days, even when it has the lock. The unfluted cylinder came with and without the lock on the 610. The 610 no dash is the most desirable.
Maybe if smith does another run of the 610 the prices on the lock revolvers will come down some.

I've got a 610 unfluted 6inch...You just don't see them come for sale often...smith and wesson periodically brings them out every couple of years. The last time that the 610 unfluted were out they were selling for 900+ new...I enjoy mine and mainly bought it to shoot 40s&w instead of the 10mm...My rule is...."If you like it...Buy It"

If I had the coin in my pocket last night I would have bought it. I will go back and pay for it, but I can't take it home for 60 days. Anyone living in NJ can tell you what a pain in the butt this state is. One handgun per 30 days IF you have a permit to purchase one. My last permit will be used for another S&W I bought and had shipped to my FFL two weeks ago, but still have to wait ANOTHER 30 days to pick it up...........


Now, how do you guys like the wood grips over the rubber grips and what exactly is a 10mm Magnum round? I see you have what I consider the "normal" front ramp site on your revolver. The one I was looking at has a high-vis type of front site. Also has holes drilled and tapped for a scope mount which he also has for sale.

10 mm magnum is just a longer 10mm. Gets about another 200 fps.

I did a little research and found a thread you had responded to a year ago in the TFL forums, I am a member over there also.

So, why did you modify the 610 for 10mm Magnum? Wanted something a little different? What was involved? What is it like shooting a 10mm Magnum compared to .357 Magnum with the same type of frame and barrel length?

I plan on buying a 629 when I get more permits and eventually a 460 and/or 500. More of collector pieces than guns I would shoot often. Guess most would call them "safe queens", but they would certainly be out at least once a month for some "fresh air"!

Just wanted something different. It is very comparable power and recoil wise to 41 mag. The cylinder needs to be reamed longer, cost about 100 from david clements for the conversion.

Mine is a 610-2. It also is a no lock, unfluted cylinder revolver.

As has already been said, the 610s hold their value. That is because those of us that own them do not want to sell them.

I have two 610s right now, the 6 1/2" and a 3". Plus I bought a 310NG as soon as I could locate one.

Like Shooting4life, all three of my revolvers have been opened up for the 10MM Magnum cartridge. This allows all three cartridges to be fired from one revolver. . . 10MM Magnum, 10MM Auto and 40S&W.

The 310NG makes for a wonderfully powerful little revolver.

Since we're talking about values/pricing what might my 610-2 be worth today?

This is the photo the gentleman I bought it off posted when he sold it to me some years back. It still looks the same today even though I have shot and carried it a little. I'll admit to babying it a bit as I sure do like it.

While I don't know the value of a 610, 3 inch like yours, I am in the process of trying to find one...so I will become "educated" once I find one for sale. If you happen to know of one for sale, please let me know.

There needs to be more 10mm guns, especially ones witout the stupid locks! I need to get me a S&W 610 some day, I just wish S&W would make it with a 10" barrel with the target trigger, target sights red ramped and target hammer like to model 29's. This would make for a great deer hunting pistol.

However a neat 10mm carbine 18" simular to the Marlin Camp carbines or the Ruger carbine would be very nice addition to the 10mm family.

If it were lnib it would go for around 1300. Used without the box maybe 1150-1200. If I found one for sale under 1100 I would be making some moves to try and come up with the money as I have been wanting a 3 inch 610 for awhile now.

Hmmm... Sorry if I'm only writing what you already know. Marlin Camp carbines were straight blow back & hence would not be ideal. SGW a.k.a. Olympic Arms in Lacy WA made gas operated 10 mm AR 15 type carbines. I don't know if they still do. I've not seen H&K's roller locked sub-gun type 10 mm as a simi-auto but Uncle Sam has purchased some as full autos. However, I believe there were 10 mm simi-auto Thompson sub-gun types built. The selection of 10 mm carbines that look like traditional sporting rifles is pretty skinny if they exist at all.

As far as a 10" S&W 10 mm handgun goes, S&W now owns Thompson Center and Thompson Center used to offer 10" 10 mm Contenders barrels. With the snub nose fad worsening every year I'd guess there's zero chance of S&W offering a 10" revolver in a caliber that never sold well enough to stay in the catalog longer than about 3 years.

Oh, yes the original poster's question was is a non-fluted 610 worth $900. Currently, yes, but if S&W makes more 610s used prices will go down for awhile. S&W has been making batches of 610s about every 3 to 5 years and when they produce the next batch they'll sit around unsold for awhile like all previous batches. Compared to .38 specials, 10 mm revolvers barely sell at all. I have a 3 7/8" unfluted 610 that cost $495 + tax new. It's a good gun and I've had enough fun firing it in matches to justify replacing it for $900 if it was lost some how. However, .45 ACP 625s reload faster than 610s and are readily available for less money used, so it would make more sense to buy one of those if I couldn't use the 625 I already own.

The O. P. also asked what front sight was originally on the 610-2 he's looking at. My 610-2 came wearing a red ramp. I'm not sure if dash 2 6.5 inchers wore a patridge or ramp, but I'm sure they did not come with fiber optics.

k22fan, You missed one, the Feather USA Rav 10mm...I was tempted by this neat package. If funds become avalible I might still get one.

I did some work on a good friend's Marlin 45acp Camp carbine, as I tore it down to clean it, I found the recoil buffer deteriorated. Got a new and improved buffer, installed it and the guns shoots great now. The wooded stock also needed repair, done that too. But what really made that little gun vicious looking wad the Choate folding stock I installed for him!

About my wish for a 10" revolver, it would be a "Perfect 10". Yes all of the 10mm folks know all to well about S&W's disposition toward this caliber. At least I have the 3rd gen. 10xx series pistols to have and to hold and shoot till death do us part!

Not an 18" rifle, but a fun little guy to shoot.

Get all the spare parts you can find now while the prices are somewhat low, H&K stopped making the MP5 in 10MM.
