M629 6 in.

My brother has a Mod. 629 that came new with rubber Pachmayr grips. The grips totally cover the steel handle frame of the gun.


I recently picked up for my genuine S&W wood grips identical to those on my own M29. When we swapped them out, it seems the frame itself for the 629 is completely different from my 29. While grips fit, on the heel of the grips the metal frame of the gun does not meet the grips, but angles inward. So there is a large opening in the grips.



Anyone know of wood grips that can be fitted to this gun? The Pachmayrs conceiled the fact that the frame did not pattern the wood grips.

The 629 most Likely a dash 4 is a round butt.You need round to square conversion stocks. Culina is your best option

That’s simply not true. My 629-3 is a square butt.

My notes say that the -4 started with a square butt in 1993 but went full on round butt in 1996. The rubber Hogue grips were introduced during this time too. This particular change did not deserve its own new dash number, for some reason.

Racoonbeast is correct. 629 round butt configuration as a production standard practice started during dash 4 series. Some are round some are square among the dash 4s depending on how early or late the production. I have a 6 inch dash 4 with square butt and flash chromed hammer and trigger while my 4 inch dash 4 is round butt with color case hardened hammer and trigger.

My 629-4 is round butt, has Hogue rubber conversion grips, and case hardened hammer and trigger.
The spec ord # on it’s box is 4164, made Monday, June 13, 1994. If that helps nail the time frame down any.

The 629-3 Classics were an exception. They were round butt frames.

I have a dash 3, and the neighbor has a dash 3. Both are 629's with full under-lug barrels. Mine is a square butt and his is a round butt. mine has a 6 inch barrel and his is a 5 inch barrel. However mine is un-fluted cylinder and his is fluted. His is drilled and tapped for scope and mine is not. His cylinder also has the black powder bevel, mine does not. We both bought them new. He has the spring loaded interchangeable front sight, I do not. Both came with rubber Hogue's, his had a metal medallion, mine did not. Lots of changes to both be called dash 3. But they are.

It appears there are no absolutes {as posters stated above}for dash 3's unless they divide between fluted and non fluted. The markings {rolled or etched } are also different.
