M64 3" ok for idpa and uspsa?

I'm currently using a m&p 9pro. But I recently got the bug I want to start using a wheel gun. I have a few revolvers 6" python, m19 2.5" and few other snubs. The only one I would consider is my 3" m64, I had smooth the action a few years ago. Is wroth trying I already have a holster and bunch of speed loaders. I may even have the cylinder cut for moon clips. What do you think?

Go for it, I use a 3'' 65 and have a blast with it for matches,,,,,just a perfect balanced revolver, in my option nothing points better.

For IDPA/SSR, you are all set with your model 64 and speedloaders. Forget the moon clips for IDPA/SSR, since that would throw you into MAJOR POWER ESR.

You can shoot it in USPSA for grins but the .45 ACP major power with moonclips in a 625 owns USPSA Revolver.

You will have fun with the 64.

I Would:
Get some Green Sight Brite on the Front Sight so you can see it.
Chamfer the chambers when you get a chance.
I suggest K Jet Loaders. The K Frames are a little close on speed loader clearance. The Jet Loaders are a little smaller in diameter than a Safariland Comp III. On the L Frame I would say either Jet Loader or Comp III. On the K Frame I think the Jet Loader is worth the extra expense.

I have both a 64 and 686 set up for SSR. I consistantly turn in better scores with the 64. Not by much, but the 64 is always ahead by a little when I shoot both on the same course of fire.

I've shot the following revolvers in IDPA SSR:

2-1/2" M19
4" M19
3" M65
4" M64
4" M67 (well, I haven't yet used the M67 in a match, but have it ready to go, pimped out with bobbed DAO hammer, and tested it out in the back yard).

I'd rate the 4" revolvers higher than the 3" and 2-1/2" revolvers due to longer sight radius, which can be helpful with the longer shots (20 yards plus).

I'd rate the 3" and longer revolvers higher than the 2-1/2" revolver, due to the full length ejector rod.

I'd rate the models with adjustable rear sights higher than the fixed sight models, not because the fixed sight models don't shoot to POA (mine all do), but due to the deeper and/or wider rear sight notch that is possible with an adjustable/replaceable rear sight blade, and a file.

And a pinned front sight is helpful...easy to swap out the front sight blade for a fiber optic front sight.

I use Safariland Comp 3 speedloaders, and North Mountain speedloader holders, and have no complaints with them.

If it's something you do carry or might carry in the future, shoot it in every gun game you can find, scores be damned. Over the years I have used some really weird revolvers at the matches and I have learned something from each experience.

I use a 4" 64 with 3 comp2 speed loaders for IDPA and like many here that trained first on a wheel gun , make bottom feeders sweat for positions , so go for it and have fun and remember round counts , then speed will come . This is a game that some day may save a life yours or someone you know
