Just received after purchasing on line from a dealer I've done business with before. The gun arrived exactly as advertised and maybe in a little better condition than I expected. The dealer took it in trade and when it got to him, someone had bobbed the hammer. Doesn't appear to be a former LE gun. Bore is excellent, forcing cone not eroded, no end shake and a good shooter. I would like to replace the hammer so I can thumb back for SA. Parts list from S&W has several hammers. Can anyone help me in figuring out what/where I can get a hammer to replace the bobbed one I have? I'm hoping that this is a drop in exchange.

Thanks
Mike

I have a 64-7 4" and it is one of my favorite S&W's, and I have many:) The 64-7 is the last 64 made with a solid one piece barrel, the 64-8 has the 2-piece barrel.

MidwayUSA has the standard MIM .265 hammers, MIM parts generally will just drop in and you can replace that bobbed hammer.

It is very likely the hammer was bobbed and the gun converted to DAO when it was a police or security gun.

If midway does not have hammer contact numeric gun parts (866 686 7424) they also should have part in stock.as stated before if part is mim should drop right in.good luck and happy shooting

Stan is on to something -- most of the bobbed 64s I have seen were cop guns -- for liability reasons they wanted to make sure nobody could even allege a negligent single action discharge -- when a cop shoots somebody, by God, the cop meant to!

Thanks guys for the information. The hammer does look like it was just ground off, not a factory job. There are no markings on the gun, even under the grips that would identify it as some type of LE, security or what ever gun. The double action pull is smooth and the SA is crisp. It shoots great and is well timed with no drag marks on the cylinder. I'll get the hammer, drop it in and all will be well with the world......I hope.
Have a great Thanksgiving!

I talked to S&W parts department and ordered a hammer for my gun. It will be a MIM part which is different from the original hammer. Parts guy said it's case hardened and would be "absolutely no problem". I have no experience with MIM parts myself but I see a big controversy on some of the Forums, this one included. Since I have no choice rather than not change at all, I'll just have to see.

A forged hammer for the frame mounted firing pin? Didn't know they existed!
