M657 Holy Grail

Congratulations on a super deal on a .41 Magnum that is not seen very often.

Another .41 Magnum fan,

Sportsterguy,
I probably shouldn't respond, but here goes. What I wrote was pretty much all tongue in cheek. It was meant to be amuzing, not religious. I liked his gun and told him so. You need to lighten up, maybe take a long walk to relax & keep the peace. And, I'll try to stick to guns.

I didn't see any humor in it. I am quite relaxed thank you as I did run 3 miles and am ready to sing Christmas songs with the family.

Merry Christmas

Roger

I ran low on money 6 or 7 years ago, and one of the guns that went was a 4" Model 57 that I let go for $315.00. sob... I bought it a couple years before that from a guy who was walking around in a gun show trying to sell it. He asked $300.00, which it was worth, I counteroffered $250.00 and he went for it. That was a very nice 57 with beautiful grips.

Looking for the elusive first issue Marlin carbine in 41. Bob

You mean like this? :)

This Marlin 1894S from the first run of ~1800 guns is my "grail" .41 magnum. That said, I picked up a 4" 657 like yours about 3 months ago and paid a bit more than you. I think you did well! Enjoy that 657, they are great shooters. Merry Christmas!

Congratulations on your find.

Here's three of my "Holy Grail" S & W .41s.

M58 with the Hornady 210 grain FMJ at about 1,000 fps.

Truly NIB M57 with all original everything including the sales slips from 1964. I am its second owner.
M57.jpg

A rare find. I did not know it existed until I saw it on Auctionarms and hit the "buy now". A M657 3 inch with full lug barrel. I knew of the half lugged versons and wanted one. I found this and was lucky.

I also am fortunate to own a 4 inch M57 in nickel.

Very nice collection! First shot if you ever decide to unload that 3".

I went to the Tupelo gun show a couple of weeks ago where I found a beautiful 4" nickel 57 (P&R) which I promptly purchased. A few broke minutes later a guy walks up and says "you the guy that likes 57"s?" and shows me two 6" nickel 57's, one P&R, and one not. I had just enough gas money to get home, so they stayed there.

Nice .41's. I'll have to throw a pic up tomorrow. With luck I'll be adding a 4" 57-1. Since there are a lot of model 57 afficionados on this thread, can anyone tell me what changes were made on a model 57-1?

I think all those pictures of awsome guns are not helping me one bit.I have no self control and now I will have to start looking for a 4'' N-Frame in 41 or 44 thanks guys!

My info says cylinder counterbore eliminated in 1982, probally pinned barrel as well. Most magnums had that change in 1982 I believe.

It's really tough to beat a 4" N-Frame in either caliber. They're great handling revolvers.

GunsAmerica - MOD 1894S 41 MAGNIM - Marlin Rifles > Modern > Lever Action - Guns For Sale & Gun Auctions B"H

I have one of these. It is the most accurate of the .41 carbines I own. The price is inflated, but that's what happens when they quit making them. I like the straight stock better then the one on the FG.

I've got one of the Marlin's too. Bought it in the late '90's. Almost new, no box for $200! The guy had about 5 phone calls the morning it was listed in the paper!

I must correct myself. The 6 inch nickel was purchased originally new in 1974. Apologies for the misconception.

In 1964 I was in the 4th and 5th grade!!!

Daddy wouldn't have let me have anything like that.....

Luck would have it and I picked up my "grail" gun today (at least for this month). It's a model 57-3 with 4" barrel. It doesn't look like it has been shot much and the action is tight. The Hogue grips will soon be replaced with some ebony wood combat eagle grips. This is my first model 57 and I've been wanting one of these for a long time. I can't wait to shoot it. I've also attached a pic of my .41 magnum harem.

I'm sorry I used the "Holy Grail" term in my description of the M657. Certainly it's not the only one in existance. In my area, good S&W's are far and few inbetween. I was certainly glad to find it. I've had a 41 Magnum of some kind ever since 1969 when I acquired a 6" 57. I handload for some 80 calibers including the 41 Magnum. I just finished loading some 45-60's for a client with a Uberti 76 Winchester. I appreciate everyone's support and I'm going to try to make some photos with my issue Kodak digital camera. Thanks so much for the info on the presentation case. Mine is of the latter type and apparently needs new fabric. Bob!!

Congrats Roadranger.........

....on the find of "your" grail gun. I'm gonna step out onto the limb and say to you that you should not apologize when you have done nothing wrong. It does however, show a decency to apologize to keep the peace. It would seem that some people are bored by the postings on the forum, as they have read them all, or are dis-interested in what others are saying. So, they feel the need to "correct" others to their way of thinking. Yes, it's true--I'm a little bored today so I thought I'd chime in my two bits. At any rate, don't let any of this detract you from enjoying your "grail gun". Sorry, I couldn't resist...............Sprefix
