M66 - M19 or M27 ?

I had an M19 several years ago that had a minor function problem (I don't remember exactly what it was) but my Dad's friend and pistol smith, Al Capone (deceased) owner of King's Gun Works in Glendale, CA, said it was an occasional problem with the 19. Otherwise, it was a sweet round butt 2.5". My question: are any of you familiar with what that problem was? It was only a few years old when I purchased it around 1980, and if I remember correctly, appeared to be fired very little. Next question, I'm looking for a nice clean unabused factory stainless 2.5" .357, that I might shoot only 50-100 rounds of .38 spl cal through per year, otherwise just maintain in excellent and ready condition. Now of the 3 models, assuming I were to purchase only 1 of the following; a 19,66 or 27, which would be your preference, and why. Thanks and I'll look forward to your comments.

I can't recall a common "minor function problem" with model 19s of the era, but if one existed I'd bet someone on the Forum does.

Regarding your second question, if it matters the shortest standard barrel on the model 27 is 3.5". Your preference may very well depend on what you can find in CA with your (insert adjective here) gun laws, but if you can find all the above for sale I would opt for the 2.5" model 66. As I recall, the 66-7 may be legal to buy from a dealer, but all the others would have to be via a private party transfer. Hope this is helpful.

Having had both the Model 19 and Model 27's, I can honestly say that I would pick the 27 with a 3 1/2 barrel every day. It shoots any loads I want from the mildest .38's to the heaviest .357's with no problem and recoil with the .38's is next to nothing. I would say it will depend on your personal preference. Another thought, there is always the Model 13 to look for too.

The only "minor" problem I can think of is the internal trigger stop that was standard on target sighted K frames. The stop could work loose and keep the trigger from releasing the hammer. It was an easy fix by simply removing the stop.

Muley Gil - You nailed it. That was precisely the problem. Once the stop was removed, it was a very enjoyable gun to shoot. Thanks for your input. murphydog & David LaPell, I just might consider the M27 w/3.5" bbl in the future, but for now I'm kinda set on a 2.5" bbl, and leaning toward the SS 66. Is there a preference toward a pinned & recessed model? Should I be concentrating on either a 66-1 or 66-2? I have several Pythons in varying bbl lengths, with my favorite right now being my 2.5", thus my current interest in a S&W 2.5". Outside having the M19 some 30 years ago, I have never owned a S&W, so pardon the unfamiliarity and all the questions.

The question I would ask is do you plan to carry or conceal the gun in any fashion for self defense? If so, stick with the 'K' frame models (19/66). They also have the barrel length you mentioned. Your choices expand considerably if you don't necessarily need a magnum or adjustable sights.

Being a San Diego resident myself for more years than I like to think about, I would look for a used or older, out of print gun.....even from a dealer. As mentioned earlier, if it is prior owned and/or on consignment, a purchase can be made via a 'private transfer' and it need not be on the 'approved' list. Finding one might prove to be a bigger problem. Check the smaller stores as opposed to chains....good stuff can be found but it will take frequent visits.
