Mag problem??

Just purchased a brand new MP 9 Shield plus Performance center. I am using a 13 round mag Pined to 10 rounds. With 10 rounds loaded into the mag I cant' lock it in, in order to lock it in, I must have the slide locked back and then releasing the slide is this normal.?

Welcome to the Forum! It's too bad that you live in one of the States that limits magazines to 10 rounds. I've had my PC M&P 9 Shield Plus (13-rd magazines) for a few years now, and initially the magazine springs were pretty robust. It was difficult to load the 13th round even with an UpLULA loader. With a round in the chamber, I had to really slap the fully loaded magazines in to seat them. However, I left the magazines fully loaded for extended periods of time and eventually they relaxed enough to make loading and changing magazines fairly easy. I don't think that you have a problem, the magazine springs are just really strong and need some time to loosen a little. Don't give up, it's an outstanding pistol and the magazines will work flawlessly. It's my primary EDC pocket pistol and I've put hundreds of rounds of all kinds downrange. Enjoy!

It sounds like whoever pinned the magazine kept their tolerances a little too tight. There should be a bit of give when the magazine is fully loaded.

If it came from the factory like that, it will likely loosen up a bit. Try keeping the 10 round magazine loaded all the time and see if the spring relaxes a bit.

I have some 10 round M&P magazines that are very tight.

Have the same problem with my new Shield-X..15 round mag seats just fine with normal pressure, the 13 round mag has to be slammed in with a 18 wheeler to lock in.

Make sure you do the usual new gun or mag stuff. Clean and wipe magwell with a smallish amount of CLP. Do the same on the outside-only of any new magazine.

Rub the CLP in thoroughly on those surfaces, and then wipe with clean cloth or cotton patch without leaving much residue when finished.

Seat an empty mag multiple- multiple! times for familiarity, and to test the mag catch/ release function. As an alternative, try loading one round of ammo or three instead of a full mag when loading ammo in this new pistol.

If you only have a single mag, there's no means for comparison with a difficult mag situation.

Yeah, it's a pretty common issue with these "restricted" mags. There's no extra space to compress the stack with the slide closed. Had this with both of my M&P 1.0s (full and compact, 10 rounds). I can only load 9 with my Maglula. I load #10 by hand. It's difficult when the mags are new, but it gets easier once they "break in". You can give the mag a good whack to seat it but it will be harder to rack the slide to charge it.
