My M&P40 is three yrs. old and all this talk about the new ones has me thinking. How many of you took out the mag safety on your M&P's?

I wasnt paying attention when I purchased my 9c and it has one. I asked Smith & Wesson if theyd remove it and make it just like the one they sell without and they said no. Is it easy to remove on my own?

I specifically ordered one with a mag safety and would never remove it. I know, and know of, way to many LEO's who are alive because of a mag safety to dismiss them as unnecessary. If you are confident that you can retain your weapon without question under every potential circumstance and it will never be pointed back at you, then I suppose a mag safety would not be needed.

FWIW, I actually tried to order my second M&P with the magazine safety ... (under the armorer discount purchase program, hence not going to find one at a retail store) ... but when I called back to check on the availability of the model configuration I wanted, I was told the current production run under way was made up of models without the mag safety. I decided to take one without the safety rather than wait perhaps up to a couple of more months.

The M&P magazine safety is elegantly simple in design and function. A steel lever and a spring. Much simpler and more robust than the design used in the 3rd gen guns, in my opinion.

It wouldn't bother me at all to have the mag safety in a M&P pistol I owned and used.

I've carried many issued and personally-owned 3rd gen guns with mag safeties for 20 years without problems.

I have with and without but haven't modified any to get there. A few of my MINOR observations on the safety.

Against:
- I don't care for the printing on the gun warning it can be fired without a mag. A gun should bear no warnings IMHO. What's next, spanish and brail? Yea, it's dangerous!

- I keep one as the "house gun" so I like revolver like point and pull simplicity. Without the safety I don't have to worry about the wife dropping the mag if she death grips the gun in fear.

Likes:
- My (lobo) carry holster covers the trigger on my 9c. As my trigger
has been lightened to 5#, I often pop the mag a 1/4" while holstering the gun. ( JUSt to assure the trigger dosn't snag and cause a AD.)

Honestly, I would not heasitate to buy either.
