I have seen the lists of restricted states(CA, HI, MA, NY, DC). What I'm wondering, has anyone compiled a list of restricted areas by zip code or area code? I mean Illinois is generally restriction free, however Cook County-12 round, Chicago-10 round and Oak park-10 rounds an so on.
I'm trying to find out if other cities or counties in restricted or non-restricted states have different magazine capacity laws.
Anyone?

I'd be careful there. Gary does a good job but there are serious inaccuracies there as well.

1st two numbers of ZipCode usually designate the state (or part of it), so

- MA = 01 or 02
- CT = 06

That will work for state-wide restrictions. City-wide restrictions can drive you up a wall as there are too many for large cities and I'm not sure that they are sequential.

Boston has its own ban on ALL rifle mags (max 10 rds) and shotgun (max 6 rds), with NO pre-ban status at all. Boston ban applies ONLY to long guns and went into effect in 1989. Almost nobody (except my MA Gun Law Seminar students :)) know about this law and to date TTBOMK nobody has ever been prosecuted for it.

If I have to do gun business in any anti-gun state,I carry a m64 in a 2 or 3 inch iwb holster. I am a wholesaler.

LenS ,

Can you give me info on what are the inaccuracies. Thank You.

Gary,

I'm not going to get too comprehensive here, as MA gun laws are so complex that the only authoritative publication is 450 pgs long. I created a 5-hr seminar just on MA gun law, spent 6 months researching and putting it together and it is still a "work in progress". I "live" on NortheastShooters.com and have posted a ton of MA gun law info there.

Here's a quickie on MA (wrong info on your site):
- Class A ONLY allows "carrying" if unrestricted, otherwise CCW is NOT legal.
- Class B allows possession and shooting but not "carrying" (since open carry, although not illegal WILL result in loss of LTC).
- Since MGL makes it illegal to "carry" any long gun uncased on a public way, no license allows "carry" of long arms in MA.
- LTCs are good for 6 years. [They haven't been issued for 5 year expiration since prior to the law change in 1998.]
- Off limits with LTC: Please show me where MGL specifies courthouses as off-limits? Most have metal detectors and don't permit it, but it is not codified in MGL. Some (land courts in particular) have no security and no posting.
- Actually no gun signs have no real legal bearing in MA. No police will arrest just due to a no-gun sign in a shopping mall, cinema, store, etc. (not to mention that anchor stores in malls are never posted). Someone has to be asked to leave first (for any reason) and refuse and then also refuse in front of the LEO. Otherwise they need to be given a "letter of dis-invite" (no trespass order) FIRST before being able to be arrested on sight if found on the property. [As a Constable I've served a number of these notices over the years.] The quoted statute is interesting but not implemented in reality for a mere sign.
- Permit info/gun ownership info is confidential info, only releasable to LE. That's been in MGLs for >40 years.
- Illegal to possess a handgun with only an FID card!
- Illegal to carry chemical sprays on school property without FID or LTC AND written authorization from person in charge of school (almost impossible to get).
- Adding Boston AWB (from 1989) would be a good thing. I'll bet there are >1000 illegal AR-15s in Downtown Boston due to people moving there with them and not knowing about this ban.

Thank you. Mass has been one of my hardest states to get info about from people. Their Statutes are one of the hardest to search and find info in. They use the word Carry when IMO it should be Transport. But thank you again for the information. Very much appreciated. That Some of that info will be added July 1. Kansas is making major changes which call for a lot of the state pages to be updated.

Gary, don't feel bad, it only took me 37 years tracking MA gun law to get a good handle on it. As for words . . . "firearm" in MGL C. 140 means a handgun (ONLY) that is capable of firing a shot (frames aren't "firearms") yet in MGL C. 269 S. 10 a "firearm" is ANYTHING that can expel a projectile by any means (BB, pellet, etc.). I think under 269-10 my entire chemistry class in high school (if it were today) would be convicted felons . . . we used to use the bent glass tubing to shoot spitballs in other classes!
