Magazine Question???

Ok, I see that a lot of People seem to prefer Magpul magazines over USGI mags. Can I ask why? Also when you load you mags do you load them full or do you leave a few out. When I was places I shouldnt have been and we were locked and loaded we never loaded our mags all the way full and to this day I still dont. Would like to read any and all opinions on this subject.

When I first ordered my M&P, I started researching and reading about accessories. I found the Pmags had a very good reputation. I bought 11 of them and loaded them up to a full 30 rounds and put on the dust cover. They sat that way for about 2 months. "They" say they can be left that way for up to a year. I wanted to see how they would do after a couple of months that way. The dust cover actually pushes down on the rounds to prevent feed lip distortion during long periods of storage.

So when I got my 15 OR, I took all 11 to the range and started shooting. I had zero malfunctions, all loaded into it just fine. It did not matter if I had an open or closed bolt.

I have one USGI style mag that came with the 15. It's OK, It came without an anti-tilt follower and is harder to take apart and clean. I put in an anti-tilt follower. I got the magpul mags cause others here said they were good and they are less expensive than the usgi ones.
I figure I dont have to be concerned with rust either with the magpul's.

My Sport came with a 30 round PMag from the get go so that was one reason I bought more. The other reasons is I just like the look and feel of them over any other mags. I keep them fully loaded with the dust cover on, when I have ammo to fill them. I currently have 2 30's, 1 w/ window and 1 w/o and a 20 round. Used the 20 for the first time yesterday and really like it while sitting at a table to shoot from.

I like the PMAGs a lot. I picked up 2 of them in addition to the one I got with my M&P. However, I did find a good deal on a DSG 10 pack that uses Magpul followers. For $9 each, it sounded like a good deal. So far, no problems at all. After using both, I feel the Magpul are put together a little better and you don't get a lot of the "rattle" when they are empty like you do with the aluminum.

I load my mags to 20 rounds each. Not sure why. Maybe just to slow me down from burning through ammo.

I also find if I dont load my mags all the way I conserve ammo myself. Thank you all for your input. I have a mixture of Pmags and USGI, and then I also have 3 thermold 20's that work real well. I had some thermold thirties that worked well but a kid came buy and offered to buy them so I sold them to him. For myself 6 30's and 4 20's are enough but I wanted to see how the rest of our forum do there magazines.

All I have are Colt M-16 mags they are cheap and plentiful in this area for some reason lol( Cherry point 1 mile away,Camp Leguine 20 miles away) so that's all I have now

I do have and use the USGI aluminum mags, and Pmags both. Between the 2, I have not much issue with either, and I feel they both work very well. Put it in perspective, I took 35 different mags with me to the last carbine course I did (Some reload all day, I just swap mags!!!)
Pmags tend to not like round #30 until they are broken in, which constitutes loading them full, and bouncing them a couple times to be sure the ammo, follower and spring are seated. Then, leave them alone loaded for a day.
At the course, we had quite a few brand new Pmags that took full loads, but had a tendency to bounce out of the rifle unless very well seated. The broken in units were flawless.
I like good quality USGI mags. They work very well, plain and simple. Again, broken in they are better than brand new. One nice feature of Pmags is the cover; it keeps ammo free from mud and excess dirt. And, they are very, very durable.
A side note; Pmags do not 'Ping' the way a metal mag does when it makes hard contact...... they are quieter. In the right situation (Hunting) this is a pretty important thing- quiet is good.

Oneeye you should try some of the Lancer AWM, they have a polymer body, with metal feed lips. I like that they are quieter than alum/steel mags, but dont have to be concerned about breaking the plastic feed lips. I have a mix of magpul and usgi and have never had a problem with any of them.

I picked up a couple more USGI yesterday, at $5 a piece at my door I cant hardly pass it up. I also the other day bought a LULA magazine loader. How I ever got buy without a loader I will never understand. When they say load a 30 in under a minute they are right and unload one even quicker. Ok I am spoiled.

To answer the Magpul vs USGI mag question I believe its over fit and finish. The Magpuls do present a nice look. Either mag is well priced.

As far as loading a mag. Well I'm old school and always have been taught to load 28 instead of 30. Hope this helps.

When my son (a sergeant in the 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team) was preparing to deploy to Afghanistan last May, he requested I get him a bunch of Magpul 30 rd Pmags. I sent him 15 (in the field, he carries them all). To put it mildly, he and I bet his life on Magpul.

He has had GI mags jam. He has NEVER had a Pmag jam or fail in any way. On that recommendation, when I got my M&P 15, I went with Magpul Pmags. He is now back in the U.S. and I credit some of that to the Pmags!! Just sayin'.....!

Well, I use the Magpuls for the 300BLK, and the GI stuff for 5.56.
It keeps things simple.
