Magazine Safety Issue

I was at the range with my 9mm Shield today — after firing off the 8 Round mag I ejected it, reloaded, racked the slide, took aim, pulled the trigger …. and NOTHING. Even though I slapped in the mag firmly, apparently the mag safety wasn't disabled. A push on the bottom of the mag and the gun fired normally for all eight rounds. I reloaded with the last three rounds in my box, … same thing. The on-site gunsmith looked it over and said it was "pilot error." I just wasn't pushing the mag far enough into the frame. I have probably fired a thousand rounds in this new gun, and this is the first such incident. I am just taking up shooting (again) and after retiring from law enforcement 24 years ago. (Paris & San Bernardino). Maybe it is just a pilot error.

I would do more investigation on the issue before being convinced it was pilot error.

How are you inserting the mag? It's possible that you slammed it in a little hard and it actually bounced off the stop and came back out a little. I've seen this happen a few times.

I don't know a thing about this gun but on the 1911 it was common practice to add a bumper pad to the bottom of the magazine to insure the magazine was seated. If you continue to have a problem you might try that. Otherwise I have no clue?

I had a Ruger 22 that need a good smack on the bottom to get the magazine seated some times. My M&P 40 doesn't have a mag safety so I can't help you with a S&W mag problem. Put some more rounds through it and see if it gets better. Most guns need a little breaking in.

Thanks all. I will try a few things and keep you posted. I was unable to duplicate the problem with an empty gun. I will have to wait until I get back to the range.

thats why I follow the KISS method. The fewer moving parts the better.
Good Luck.

Still an Issue

I went back to the range — loaded my short mag with 1 round and the other with 8. Fired the single round, swapped the magazine, racked the open slide and ... no joy 3 out of 4 tests. A second pull of the trigger does fire the first round and subsequent rounds fire normally. A visual inspection show either magazine properly disengages the magazine safety. Any ideas? I'm thinking this kid may have to go back to the factory.

I wish you were closer. I'd love to see this in person. I'm sure we could figure it out. Alas, you may have to send it in. I'm not sure that will cure it, but it is your only recourse at this time.

Nope - In Florida

Do you have the Chamber Load Indicator (big red flag) on top of the slide? If so, you have a California model. If not, your Shield likely does NOT have a mag safety.

What is it's model number?

Perhaps it's the sear deactivation lever that's the problem. Take the slide off. Take a picture looking down the mag channel from above. Make sure the sear is in the frame and post it.
