I picked up a 29 Magna Classic today that I bought on GB. The gun looks to be unfired outside of the factory, and is pretty much flawless. It did come with the case, front sights and paperwork, but no cleaning kit.
To me though the stocks look to be incorrect. I had a 629 Magna Classic a few years back that I regretted selling, so I replaced it with this. I prefer blued over stainless and this has a beautiful deep lustrous blue.
Back to the grips though. The combat stocks on the 629 were a little "flatter" and relieved on both sides, these stocks have deeper finger grooves and are more rounded, only relieved on the left side plus the gun doesn't really fit in the case quite right with these installed. They do appear to be original Smith stocks with a date code of May 09 1991 which is about the right time frame. Also, if you look at the pic of the escutcheon on the left stock it appears to be not seated correctly and possible this is why nothing seems to fit properly.
I located is a pair of what I believe to be the correct stocks but they are priced at $400. Seems a little high but at the same time searching the internet I can find all kinds of the stocks like I have but none of the ones that this gun should have. Add $400 on to what I have into the gun itself and I would be pretty deep into it.
Have any of you ever seen a Magna Classic with this type of stock? Also, do you know of anyone that could repair the escutcheon on these as I have a 3" Lew Horton 24 that I no longer have the original combat stocks for so these would be perfect for it.
I realize these are a lot of questions, but I know if there are any answers to be found they would be here!
I just put the Hogues on until I can get this sorted out!
Thank you for all your time.
