Ran across a SW 66-2 with a magna ported 2.5" barrel today. Is the magna-ported barrel a factory job?

Magna ported are aftermarket done. I had a 29-2, 4" that was magnaported. It was a joy to shoot. The porting lowers the value to most people. I have 66-2, 2.5, that is not ported. That and my 10-5, 2" are both fun to shoot! Bob

I agree it lowers the value; firing a snub that is ported is LOUD
Magnaport also did/does rifles and shotguns. Most folks also think it devalues shootguns (not just by Magnaport, but by anyone doing porting)

In about 1995/96 there were 3" Mag-Na-Ported Model 66s as exclusives from both Lew Horton and RSR. I can not recall the differences

From about 1996/97 forward, there were several runs of Mag-Na-Ported Model 66s that were available from any distributor as Factory original revolvers.

A -2 engineering revision was most likely not shipped that way from the Factory

If you come across any of those lower priced Mag-Na-Ported Smith and Wesson revolvers, please give me a heads up so I can buy them

Yes there are several variant model 66 with factory and or at least purchased NIB from several distributors with magna porting. 3" PC 66-3 and 66-4 were factory original with porting Never say never or always when it comes to a S&W firearm. There were also 500 Ashland 66-2 produced and I believe shipped with Magna porting. I know my 3" PC 66-3 F Comp is not devalued because it is ported.

A friend of mine once had a 4" Mag-Na-Ported M19.A number of us fired it. I found it didn't do much about taming the recoil. Now, when you move up to a .41 or .44 Magna, the porting did make a difference.

HP- Porting Holes

Years ago I purchased a 4" bbl. Highway Patrolman that had a two ~1/16" "porting holes" drilled on either side of the barrel by a previous owner. I got the HP for a decent price, it's in great shape, shoots well, and those holes are not too unsightly- but I don't believe they affect felt recoil at all. I contacted Mag-Na-Port (Michigan) to see if they could machine those holes into a real Mag-Na-Port, but was informed that their machining process would not work with existing barrel holes. They also told me that they receive these types of requests often, so quite a few folks must have tried to tame their .357s by drilling holes in the barrels. Not sure why...a typical N-frame revolver with a 4" or longer barrel handles .357 loads with ease.

I have several guns that were Mag-na-Ported and I think they are fun mods. One of my 2.5" Combat Magnums is ported (not by Mag-na-Port), but it is a real fun one to shoot. And it does kind of light up the sky at dusk.
