Magna-Ported Model 66

Thinking about magna-porting my Model 66. Does anyone know a good source to do it, thanks.

They did my 629 20+ years ago. Did a great job.
I live close enough that I just walked in and dropped it off (had to show ID) and they called me a few days later.

Just for the sake of clarity, there is only one place in human history to get Mag-Na-Porting done, that’s their very specific name.

Probably multiple place to have porting done, but if you want the EDM trapezoid porting that MNP does, MNP is the only answer.

This is a barrel off of a model 66-4 with porting done by Magnaport (?)

Yeah, Mag-na-port would be the company for magna-porting, LOL!!!

They have been doing quality work for a very long time though.

My 629-2E had its 3" barrel magna-ported clear back in 1989/1990 when purchased new. I'm sure many places can port a barrel, but you can't go wrong with MNP's expertise.

If you want your Model 66 Magna ported, then you send it to Mag-na-port. They still hold the patent on their porting system. My question is what do wish to accomplish through porting? If it is reduced recoil, rubber grips are heck of a lot cheaper and are not a permanent, value decreasing modification. Porting will reduce muzzle rise, especially with high pressure loads, but it does it by directing some of the burning gases upward, which can be impressive to see and very loud if shooting from a covered firing line at the range.

I only have one MagnaPort revolver and that is a 29-3 that came that way when I bought it used. It was also my first .44 magnum so I can’t speak to the recoil or muzzle rise reduction. I put a set of Pachmyer I had in stock and it’s the perfect grip for me.
I concur with others if you decide to do it, I would only have MagnaPort do it.

I had a 66 Magnaported back in the late 70’s, early 80’s and wished I hadn’t done so. It was a duty gun and although it tamed the recoil some it also melted the red ramp insert and the flash in low light hindered vision.

I checked Magnaport's website and they state only 3" long barrels or longer, so, since mine is 2 1/2" barrel I won't be doing it.

I think it’s a totally unnecessary modification and any used gun that’s had it done is a deal breaker for me.

My 627 is magna-ported but also Quadraported....it is awesome....So good, I had my Scandium 1911SC .45 done at Magnaport....1 week turnaround...

I've shot guns with other types of porting, and two with the actual Mag-na-Port process; a 12 Ga. shotgun and 4" S&W .41 Mag revolver. With both, muzzle rise was definitely reduced. But recoil did not seem to be moderated. Recoil was more linear, uncomfortably so for me. Were I considering porting though, I would go with the Mag-na-Port process others have suggested...

I had my 29-2 Magnaported back in the early 80's! I could definitely tell a difference in the muzzle flip! They did a great job, I feel like it was money well spent!

Exactly! Porting does not reduce recoil, it reduces muzzle rise and that can redirect the recoil.

I have an SP101 that was ported long ago by Accurate Plating and Weaponry in Florida. They did an excellent job and I think it does help a little with muzzle flip but I also think that a ported revolver needs an expansion chamber to truly be effective.
