Magna porting 8 3/8" barrel Mod 57 or 29

From personal experience I have not found Magna Porting on a revolver of 6" or 4" of much benefit.

However, I wounder if it would be of benefit in muzzle flip in an 8 3/8" barrel on a Model 57 or 29.

Does anyone have experience with Magna Porting on an 8 3/8" Model 57 or 29.

I thought about Magna Porting the M-29 I had but after a couple hundred rounds of OTC 240gr Remington ammo I didn't see the need as the barrel rise was only about 2-3".. Less than that with 2 hands!!

Personally, I don't think it will make that much of a difference. The 8 3/8" barrel is long and a bit muzzle heavy and that tends to dampen muzzle rise all by itself.

The effect of Magnaporting is somewhat subjective. But, it's not arbitrary! It has a lot to do with your shooting style.
Many folks use a lot of tension, especially with the big bruisers and a two handed hold, in an attempt to control the gun and/or hold it steady. This can actually increase the impact of recoil.
It's similar to the idea that people who brace themselves in a car accident can often receive more severe injuries.
Traditional target shooters usually use a lighter grip, in part for better trigger sensitivity. You get more muzzle flip, but less a sense of a hard impact in the hand. In this case, magnaporting definitely has a very positive effect. The reduction in muzzle flip is more noticeable.
Relax, let the recoil happen, and use porting to subdue some of the muzzle flip.

I have a model 57 with 8 3/8" barrel, and it's a *****cat. Not sure what I'd want from porting it.

Would NOT port any barrel. Nothing to do with recoil some muzzle flip. IMHO porting on any thing takes away some value.

That's the least barrel that you need to tame the flip on.

I magnaported my 4" 629-1. I used it for side matches. Faster target acquisition was enhanced, not recoil. As a tool for competition, value was not a consideration. I would not have done it for untimed target shooting.
