Magna-Porting Barrels

Smith & Wesson produced some ported barrels, but I've been told they never did any "Mag-na-porting" in house. It's a trade name and a proprietary process owned by the company of the same name here in Michigan. S&W did send guns and/or barrels to Mag-na-port to have the work done and I believe they started doing that in the 1990's. Some distributors also had completed guns shipped directly from S&W to Mag-na-port and then sold them as "specials". I would guess that most of them were stainless steel. The people at Mag-na-port are very helpful and they do have records. You can also get information from Lew Horton on their guns.

Here's a Lew Horton Special that started life as a standard 2-½" 686-4. Note the modified product code. The Spec Ord code dates it 1996 and it was shipped directly from S&W to Mag-na-port and then on the LH, where they fitted the grips and added the sticker!

Hi:
Reading from a recent post, I found that S&W Magna-Ported some barrels.
Was this done to certain models? Blued, Nickeled, or Stainless? Any particular era?
Thanks,
Jimmy
Mag-Na-Port is still porting guns for S&W.

Porting

I have the 629 in a dash 4 with the mag-n-ports and really like it. It is a laser engraved Rocky Mountain Hunter. The Elk on the sides is a nice touch. Does help with the recoil, 300 grain rounds are still a handfull! The noise is a handfull too! Made the mistake of firing it while just inside the garage with the metal door up. The noise was just about painfull.

OK, you're driving through town late at night with your wife in the front passenger seat. When you stop at a red light some crack-head breaks out the passenger side glass and starts trying to get into the car. You pull your Magna-Ported gun from your waist and point it at the perp with the barrel inches from the wife's face and squeeze off a round. What sort of damage do you suppose that blast of hot gas is going to do to her face? Ported guns are OK for hunting weapons but for SD they are ill advised.

Id even go so far as to call them less than ideal for field use. the ports are just more openings for tootsie rolls and gummi bears to migrate into.
they are probably at their best on a gun range where extended shooting sessions and comfort prevail

If you are going to do that, she'd better duck, ported barrel or not. The gases from the barrel/cylinder gap would be plenty bad, not to mention the muzzle blast.

Well, for starters, I always leave enough room between me and the vehicle in front of me to take evasive action/leave in a hurry and/or run over the BG...or I'd just get out of the car and do what needed to be done...aka...don't bring a knife to a gunfight, IYKWIM?

Secondly...always practice situational awareness when ever you're out & about.

I don't have an issue with a ported firearm if it helps keep me on target.
