Anything I need to look for (i.e., potential problems) when considering purchasing a used revolver that's been magnaported? Specifically, a model 629.

Ported guns generally sell for less than factory original specimens. Aftermarket modifications rarely add value, but if you like the features it can be a plus for the buyer. I've seen red ramp front sight inserts discolored because of the ports and the guns are generally louder and harder to clean than those without ports.

Just do the usual inspection and make sure it's mechanically sound.

Thanks for the reply. I'm not necessarily looking for one with a ported barrel (I'm pretty indifferent to them in general), but looking for a "shooter grade" and, as you note, may be able to save a little $.

I modify most every gun I've own in some way; sights, melding, tuning, moons, etc. However, porting is where I draw the line. It may increase the value but I don't think in increases the chances of selling it. Some of the newer styles look like someone went crazy with a drill press. To each their own ~

I had a model 66 that was magnaported. It was nice when shooting full power loads because I thought it definately took some of the bite out of magnum loads. On the downside, muzzleflash in low light is very noticeable, and the red ramp not only discolored, it melted the bottom edges.

I have a Mod 29 that was magnaported, and it does reduce muzzle flip and perceived recoil. I have had no problems with it, and I have shot a lot of cast lead bullets through it.

I don't have any experience with Magnaporting in handguns but I did have my Ruger No. 1 in .458 Win Mag Magnaported many years ago. I was distinctly unimpressed with it. I don't know if I noticed a difference in perceived recoil. Knowing what I know now, I'd never have done it. Don

..same as above but my two are a M58 and M657 3"...no problem with cast or jacketed bullets BUT if you use "s***" soft cast bullet you can expect to get some lead not only in the ports but in the bore as well...

Turned down a model 57 at the last gunshow because it was ported. You need good earmuffs; nobody will stand next to you and you can't sell it. IMHO

Magnaport was the craze when it came out and Larry Kelly made some big bucks doing it as you can see by photos and articles written about the African safaris he took with customer money. I have few ported guns with mixed feelings. It does keep down muzzle flip but also fouls the front sight quickly. I would buy one but would not pay extra.
