Magtech ammo

I am not questioning your patriotism, but I don't think you fully appreciate what it takes to run a corporation the size of Olin or ATK. Obviously our current ammunition "situation" is due to the change in administration. The president has only been in office 8 months and this is nowhere near enough time to determine if the retail demand for ammunition is an anomaly or a long term trend.

Even if they believed that these new facilities would provide a good return on their investment, commercial credit on the scale of the hundreds of millions of dollars it would take even to re-tool existing facilities is nearly impossible to find.

It takes years to plan these types of investments and by that time, Obama may be out of office!

Besides, at some point my personal economic situation has to come into play. I am not going to pay 2 or 3 times the market value of American-made ammunition to some "entrepreneur" on Gunbroker or at a gun show if I can't find it at a retail outlet. I realize these guys are just trying to make a living so they can send their kids to school, but I don't have to pay to send them to Harvard!

I know you think it is very unpatriotic of me to not want to give up recreational shooting just because I can not find American-made ammunition at a reasonable price, but I am still buying my foreign-made ammunition from an honest, hard-working, law-abiding American businessman so in that way, I am supporting the American economy.

Scott, sorry if I was short tempered with you. It seems that every time I mention buying American products to anyone all I get are their BS excuses about how it isn't possible. Sometimes it isn't, but oftentimes it only takes a little more legwork (if any) to do. It really can be done, and if it can't, I'd still prefer to buy something made in Malaysia, or Mexico to something made in Russia, or especially China. I'm not talking about paying two, or three times the price either. I wouldn't usually. In my case I can get Wolf 7.62x39 FMJ for nine or ten bucks a box. The Federal American Eagle is twelve. It costs more, but comes in a brass case and I'm sure the quality is bettter. I'll pay the money and buy something made in the U.S. everytime under those kind of circumstances.

I hope this post clarifies where I'm coming from and once again, I apologize.

Actually, we have no quarrel over Russian ammo. I am Ukrainian and my wife is from Lithuania and as a matter of course, we try to avoid things that come from Russia since we were once part of the Soviet Union and that is why we are here in the first place.

In this global economy, sometimes all the best you can hope for is something sold by an American company since there is no way of knowing where the components were made.

I haven't used that mentioned load, but magtech was my primery plinking ammo for my glock 17 bevor I sold it. I had no problems with their 9mm ammo.

I like the Magtech 38 Super. It chronos at over 1200 fps from a 1911, and you can shoot it in your K and N frame 38/357's, if you want to.

I've shot some 115gr 9MM through a Walter P1 and zero problems,it seems like ok ammo,but that one or two boxes say nothing on the whole line they offer.

Beyond that-I've shot a ton of Wolf and could never get why people say it sucks,it goes bang all the time the only down side is how dirty the stuff is!

Two Boxes of Junk

Stopped by one of our local dealers yesterday and lo & behold, he had almost a full case of Magtech .38 Special (158gr, FMC-Flat) on the shelf!!! Holy Smokes! In our community of about 200,000 people, I've only seen 2 boxes of .38 Special since the election!

Sure! I'll take a couple of boxes at $19 per!

Back home, I ran a cylinder-full thru a newly acquired model 442 and had 3 FTF's out of a five round cylinder! WTH??? I'm thinking light strikes and pretty disappointed that my new 442 is going to need some work.

Walked back into the house, grabbed a model 66, loaded up a cylinder-full of the .38 Magtechs and had 2 FTF's out of 6 rounds!!! And that particular 66 will gobble up anything you feed it. Never a FTF.

This dealer is a good guy and I'm sure that he will have no problem in taking the Magtech back. I considered keeping it; as I only bought it for target practice, but 5 FTF's out of 11 rounds is simply unacceptable.

I have seen a lot of Magtec in my classes and it seems as good as any other range ammo. The two guns that had problems with it also had problems with Winchester and Remington though both were .38's.
