I have tuned a number of K, L, and N frame revolvers. I now have a small bag full of main springs and rebound springs. Two thirds of them are stock S&W springs. The others are unidentified reduced rated Wolf and Wilson springs. These things are cheap enough but I would still like to identify and sort them by spring rating. Flexing them in my hands does not seem to be a reliable means of measurement. Is there a simple way of doing this without fabricating and calibrating a spring rating jig? Making such a jig would be more trouble than these springs are worth.

Yes, get yourself a vernier caliper and measure the wire thickness. The thicker the wire, the heavier the spring ( and vice versa).
After a bit you can build a data list of what # spring is of what wire diameter.
I don't have my list handy or I'd give you a head start.

p.s. An inexpensive vernier can be had from harbor freight dot com.

I have an electronic digital caliber. I will measure the coil thickness as you have suggested. Thanks.

For reference, here are some current measuements on Wolff rebound springs......

(note: OAL's are not 'exact" and vary a bit, all have 16-17 coils)

OAL WIRE DIAM

12# 1.350" .0305"
13# 1.150" .032"
14# 1.150" .033"
15# 1.235" .0325"
16# 1.325" .0325"
