Manufacture date needed

I just purchased a s&w model 10-6 nickel plated
Serial number D540134, 4" bull barrel no adjustable sights
Any idea of the date of manufacture

1973 to 1974 according to the SCS&M4 edition

It's impossible to tell the date of manufacture. The ship date is what your looking for. SCSW 4 guessed wrong on the dates. Yours shipped earlier.

Welcome to the forum.

According to the SCS&W 3rd edition the 10-6 was introducted in 1962. The "D" prefix began with D1 in 1967

1973-74 saw serial numbers D510001 - D659901.

1973 would be my guess.
