Manufacture Date

I just picked up a Model 10-5 serial number D8711xx and am looking for manufacture date. Looks like 1976.

Any better info would be appreciated.

I'm seeing 1976, I'm curious why your guess was so far off what the SCSW4 suggests?

I have a S&W Mod. 10 with D2444xx that is late 69 to early 70.

My guess was from a table that has 10-5 starting in 1962 as well as 10-6, then with 10-7 starting in 1977.

That is why I asked the question - S&W isn't known for a nice, simple list of models and serial numbers.

They stamp frames with serial numbers as they are made but use them in production in random order so manufacturing dates are very difficult to pinpoint. Shipping dates, on the other hand, are very accurate.

My guess was from a table that has 10-5 starting in 1962 as well as 10-6, then with 10-7 starting in 1977.

In 1962, the Model 10 serial prefix was still a C. The D prefix didn't show up until 1968.

The 10-5 and 10-6 were made concurrently from 1962 until 1977. The 10-7 and 10-8 replaced them, respectively.
