I have a stainless M65-5. I believe it is a police trade in.

Right over the model number a capital "U" is stamped. Does anybody know what the "U" means?

IMO, it doesn't mean anything. Just a unique inspector or assembly stamp.
There have been posts in the past where someone found a heart shaped stamp in the same area

Was told by a retired S&W employee that the "U" mark means that at somepoint in time the firearm had been sent back to smith to be refurbished and than resold as used.

I have one of the 65-5's and was told the same thing. Mine was in mint condition. I really like the round butt.

I have a model 65 that was a police trade-in and it also has the U stamped on it. It is in excellent condition and locks up tight as new.
