Marlin 1895 & 1894

I just sold a 2004 (pre-Rem) JM stamped 1894 Cowboy Limited in .44 mag. Beautiful rifle but nothing I was ever going to get around to shooting. The gentleman that bought it was head over heels for it. We went shooting together after he got it. Functioned perfectly with both magnums and specials, accurate and fun to shoot. That octagon barrel balanced oh so nicely.

My shooting is limited to my 25 yard range 99% of the time so off it went to feed my handgun habit lol.

I have a few Japan guns that are all well fit. A Browning 1886, Winchester 1873 & a Model 70 Super Grade.

To be fair we did pull a current Japan Winchester 1873 that also had some wood issues. They weren't as bad as the Marlin & the wood was higher quality on the Winchester.

I would like either an 1892 Win or a 1894 Marlin in 44 Magnum, preferably with a 24" octagon barrel just because in my mind that looks just right.

The Marlin 1895 Cowboy felt so thin & light compared to my 1886 or 71 for that matter since they are so similar. Also didn't feel anywhere near as solid as either of those two. Would you guys say that's way off base?

Could not disagree , I too would take an 1886 or a 71 over the 1895 any day . The reason I went with the Marlin was $$$ . Was still raising two young boys and looking at sending them to college so the Winchesters were out of my budget . The 95 was half what the Winchester cost . The 95 is plenty solid and strong enough for anything I would shoot in it but it doesn't have that bank vault lockup feel that the 86's have .

I have looked at a few Turnbull 1894's that really looked great as you would expect. About the same price as a Winchester 1892. The Turnbull 1895's were significantly more. Really like the lever guns & another 45-70 plus a 44 mag one would make me happy. Nothing against current Marlins but I haven't seen one that says quality yet.

I've watched a few pre safety versions of both on GB, but my desire to get into reloading will take priority over another gun at this point.

I do have to say I really like the way a peep sight can be mounted on a Marlin. Just looks right to me. Other than the tang peep sight it’s the next best looking option.

I'm the other way around . The tang sights for Marlins are in the exact wrong place for me and I don't like the thick lump base that they use . The Winchester sights are much better with the long thin base plate .

The tang sights on lever guns and single shot hammer guns look
official but are not for me to use in the woods. If you are using
a cartridge with recoil you have to be careful you don't get a
tang sight under the eye brow. Fine for target work but a reciever
type peep makes a more practical sight for target and woods. I
had a incident with a tang and 45/70 that I don't want to do
again.

This is my favorite look for a peep sight. Just classic old West to me.
