I bought my 39A Golden in 1989 and have put many thousands of rounds through it since. It out shoots my Browning A-Bolt .22 and several others I've owned.
For a while I shot in a 50ft indoor bench rest .22 "squirrel rifle" league. No target rifles, no match ammo- jsut standard velocity fare under $6 per 50 round box. We shot at the milk bottle cap targets, 9 rounds of single shot and a 10th with a five shot group. Aggregate score closest to .000 inches won. Used the 39A for three weeks (replaced it with a used Marlin 800SQ-superb accuracy in an ugly package!). We had 15 shooters-mine was the only lever. Had a best shot of .009 from dead center a couple times, 5 shot groups of .025-.159. best aggregate score .351 inches. Came in third of 15 shooters that day. Rifle was a huge pain in the butt to single load as a lever isn't supposed to be a bench gun.
