who here eats mater sandwichs in the summer when they are fressh from the garden.I put mayo on the bread then the mater one some time two slices depends on size.them I blacken it with pepper.I mean I unscrew the lid on the pepper shaker.then a shake of salt and lettuce and its mmmmmm good.

Ain't nuttin' better than a good ole homegrown like that. I flat love 'em! I go a little lighter on the pepper though. Once in a while I'll really get fancy and make a BLT with them.

Summer BLT :
-grill the tomato slices
-grill the bacon
-butter both sides of the bread and grill that
-don't even think about grilling the lettuce....

I like tomatos, sliced and cold, with a little salt. On a sandwich I gotta have some meat. Yesterday it was Cotto salami, lettuce, American cheese, mayo and tomato slices. Cool and refreshing on a hot day.

You need to use fresh ground pepper, with a pepper mill. That ground pepper is ****.

I have used the fresh ground with a pepper mill and its good too. the only time I ever use pepper is on mater sammitchs.

No lettuce, no nuthin' but salt pepper and mayo. And it's a SANGwitch where I come from.

Just put a couple of slices of maters on a good old peanutbutter sandwich. You will not need any salt or pepper. It will be absolutely delicious. I believe that is what they will feed us up in Heaven. I eat it every day as long as maters are available.

Sliced home-grown 'maters and mayo on well toasted whole wheat bread.

Yum-yum!!!

Store bought , hot-house grown red things may look OK , but have NO taste.

Really!

I think you just solved the 'problem' of getting my grandson (age 7) to like maters!

I'm going to go try that RIGHT NOW!!! :D :D :D

mater sandwichs, nothing better on a hot day. I like them on fresh white bread with Miracle Whip, a shake of sea salt and two or three shakes of fresh black pepper.

My Dad ate mater sandwiches, so did my Mom, and my wife. Me, sorry, I got to have some bacon in there between them red maters.

I pretty much live on tomato sandwiches during the season. I try to use up a years allotment during the short season.

At the risk of being ridiculed by my S&W forum brothers and sisters, I have to confess to using, once in a while, Bac-O's on my mater sammiches.

I also recommend mayo over Miracle Whip for the authentic version of the MS.

OK, I'm ready for the slings and arrows! Just don't ban my Bac-O's.

Thick sliced whole grain dark bread, real mayonnaise spread heavily on both pieces of bread, 3 or 4 thick slices of tomato, Kosher salt and ground pepper, thin slice of Vidalia onion, thinly sliced avocado - the OAT sandwich. Pop open a cold Labatt's Blue, and you're in heaven.

I like em with a thick cut slice of fried boloney (it's bologna in other places) If I'm not making samiches with em I've got a plate slice to go with whatever else I'm eating at the time. On the sliced maters, pour a little olive oil over em and dust em with garlic salt and pepper. I had probably the best crop I've ever had this year. I moved some rabbit cages and worked the ground with a grubbing hoe before planting. I couldn't tie them up fast enough. I usually grow em faster than I can eat them and enjoy giving them to friends.

Like to add a few slices of "cuke" on top of the maters, evens out the sweetness of the maters ! Now if Ramps only came in the same time as maters !!!!! Still nothing better than a bed of cornbread covered with soupbeans, topped with kill'd branch lettece and a side plate of fried taters and Ramps !!!!! Man.... bout an hour you can peel the paint off the walls !!:D

Glad most of you got it right.

Light bread, dukes mayo, one slice of a big ole mater, lots of salt and three times that for the pepper.

Now, the boys at work substitute a Hardee's biscuit swimming with butter for the light bread and Mayo. I've watched for years and just can't bring myself to do it. They seem really happy.

Rye bread with butter, Salt and a little black pepper, makes the best mater samwitch imo.
