The little guy and I were shopping for dinner and look who we ran into. I just had to have a pic of him with the greatest living stuntman!

BTW, all he had in his cart was a pound of bacon and a case of Heineken...maybe that's what he owes his longevity to...:)
 
Keeping with the theme - always put a little bacon in your meatloaf - 3-4 slices per
pound of meat - dice it up and mix in - awesome!
 
Raw - it cooks in the beef and the fat melts throughout - you wouldn't want to lose any of the bacon fat by pre-cooking it :D

Be sure to dice it up first.

Sounds great - add garlic and that's pretty much my recipe although I doubt that no two ever were exactly the same - nothing really measured, just tossed in a bowl and mixed.

Also - if you use an actual loaf pan, try giving it up and just freeform the meat loaf on a shallow baking pan (your wife will appreciate aluminum foil!). Lots of crisp crust and the excess fat pours off.

Love the Italian parsley too - our garden crop wilted about 2 weeks ago with the cold weather.

As a fellow Italian, I would have expected you to capitalize "italian" parsley :p

I met Hal back in 1977 through stunt woman kitty oneil. They had a outfit called "Stunts unlimited". Kitty was driveing a rocket car makeing records on lake el mirage dry lake. Thats between palmdale and victorville. I and my buddy bill was flying over the dry lake and seen the huge crowd so I landed nearby. Hal asked me to fly a photographer over while she made some record runs. We filmed it from the air. I think the photogapher was from wild world of sports.
Hal or her husband, asked me to come again the next day to standby with my plane. I did. Kitty gave me a nice gold plated belt buckle with her engraved records on the back and a likeness of her on the front standing in front of her rocket car. Also gave me a shirt with her and car on it saying "stunts unlimited" and autographed it. I will see if I can find the buckle and take a picture of it and post it later. Kitty is deaf and mute. They said she could "feel" the car and made a good driver.
I guess I was charged up. Bill got in behind me. I thought I couldnt do just a normal takeoff and needed to "juice it up". I had taken it for granite that bill had strapped himself in but couldnt see as he was sitting behind me in my citaberia. I had a climb prop on the plane for towing gliders. It really would take off and climb out super fast with that set up. I didnt tell bill what I had in mind. I took off, lowered the nose to build up some steam and pulled up into a immelman. Thats where you do a half loop, roll out from upside down at the top and now you are going straight back from the way you started but higher. Anyway that was the plan. I got almost upside down in the ark and then heard bill yelling at me some uncomplimentry names. He was hanging on some braceing upside down out of his seat bent along the roof! He hadnt buckeled up!

For years, I used a corning ware pan, and would have to soak it and really scrub it to get it clean. I tried a foil pan, and was hooked...now, I use a disposable foil pan whenever possible! I think it actually makes a better meat loaf for the reasons you mentioned.
 
I was lookin' for the guy who sang Paradise By The Dashboard Light. I can relate to that song.;)

Meatloaf is one of only two things I can make that don't involve a charcoal grill. The other being Chili. Both of these dishes will kill you totally dead if you eat them every day, so I don't.

Here's my Tippy Top Secret Recipe:
At least 85% lean ground chuck (A lot of it).
Andoulle Sausage.
LOTS of garlic.
Garlic salt.
Shredded cheese mixed in.
Crackers and eggs mixed in.
A layer of thinly sliced ham on the bottom of the greased pan.
A layer of pre-cooked bacon in the middle.
Fresh mushrooms on top.
A layer of Provolone cheese spread on top just before done.
Pizza sauce spread on just before done.

You're gonna need lotsa napkins, and some good bread with it.
Also, a defibrillator nearby might be a good idea.:D

This is so good it's sinful.

Geezuz he's lost a lot of weight...he looks like he just stepped off the set of "Tales From the Crypt."
 
With age I am confused. At the time I actualy thought kitty and hal were married. They werent although I remember being introduced to what I thought was her husband. In googeling her I see where she and hal had a huge falling out. Must have happened almost right after I met them all. The company that sponsered her wouldnt let her make the final try in their car but says needham had paid them $25,000s to let him attempt it as he or they had rights to a doll of him somehow in a deal. I see their also is a doll of her. I found the buckle and on the back it says "Fastest woman in the world" "618 miles per hour". Here is the buckle and the plane I almost lost bill out of. Same time frame.

If you want to try great meatloaf, use your normal recipe, use a non loaf pan or foil pan, and cook it indirect on a charcoal grill!! Best meatloaf ever and the only way I cook it anymore!!

"Bill" is in the center. Red on the left, me on the right. Bill and I worked together and have been the best of friends since we met on the job in 1965. The picture is around 1973. Bill is 10 years older than me, going on 82 now. We still are in touch but he lives in oklahoma. He was the charactor of charactors! Ever time I recall that incident I bust up laughing even if I am home sitting by myself! In the picture we were camping in the sierras, its night, we all had a little to drink and bill is inspecting a ruger old army I had. His wife was along and caught the three of us off guard. Red, another great friend to this day was sick besides. Its one of my favorite pictures. We all had many good times together.

I love this place. Where else do you find a thread with meatloaf recipes, stuntmen, land-speed records and wild airplane rides on the same page. I logged some inverted flight time in my friend's Citabria once, doing aerial photography over a construction site. Only problem was, he didn't warn me, either, and all of a sudden there were Nikon cameras and lenses flying out of my bag and slamming into the plexiglas canopy. That was almost as much fun as when we ground-looped a '49 Piper Clipper taildragger landing at about 80 mph in a crosswind. Good old days.
 
Sip; You are becoming the Martha Stewart of the Forum with recipies like that. Merrill, your stories crack me up, for sure. All my other friends here on the Forum have stories & problems that I can relate to in my life. Sort of "Been there & done that" sort of thing. I wish I still had some of the irons I've owned over the years but raising a family & trading stuff off I don't have many now. Once I had 23 S&W's in my collection.
 
Dick if I recall right you did a career for ma bell in california? If so, did you know a guy by name of ed ford? I belive he was one of the engineers that would have been in your era working there just after world war two and retireing there. He had the ridgecrest area and put in those lines and repeater stations around kernville etc. He was a close friend of mine for a few years.
 
squarebutt: I wiped out a tripacer in a bad groundloop back in 1975 or 76. I had some good excuses, but they were almost unbeliveable. Not only that, but it was a beautiful metalised tripacer. Someday I will write about it.
