No, no, no, the time lost is not looking for it, but retrieving it. I know exactly where to find it. That tool, that part, is either on top of the transmission between engine and firewall, or else it bounced and rolled exactly to the center line of the car underneath it.
That latter is so accurate, it could be used for tramming a frame or other precision measurement. I think it has to do with a combination of gravity, magnetic forces and the number of swear words it hears.

Spring loaded gun stuff, OTOH, goes into space and gets lost among the satellite junk orbiting the earth for years. It's fruitless to look for it, especially if your bench and garage is cluttered like mine. When it eventually falls out of orbit years from now, some guy will find it in his back yard, and it will end up in the Smithsonian as an artifact.

No, it's not behind the engine. I've lost tools that way before. It's in my pocket. I was thinking when I put it there, but couldn't remember that far back. Like the guy who can't find the glasses that are propped up on his head. Yeah, my mom raised some really bright kids.
