Isn't there a big race coming up Saturday?
In Indianapolis, Indiana? Somebody named IZOD is putting on a 500 mile race.
The gentlemen pictured below were winners of the Indy 500 back when the race was called The Memorial Day Classic.

As a kid, the Indy 500 was a very big deal. That was before NASCAR sucked all of the cash up. It also lost folks during the split a few years ago.

But, I had a chance to visit the track a few years ago to see the MotoGP races (and have been back every year for them since). The history of the event and the place pulled me back in.

I might not watch all of the race, but I will catch some of it for sure.

BTW, isn't it on Sunday?

Never on Sunday?

Many years ago the Indy 500 was an event for our family. The first picnic for the year. We'd all be sitting around the radio at the park, listening to the race. in the 60s the average speed was around 120MPH. That made for an all day event.
And then the Langhorne 100. Much closer to home for us.

And you are right the race is Sunday

I quit going when they split also. Too many big egos.
I wanted to see names like Foyt, Andretti, Mears, Unser,
Johncock, Ruby, Sneva.
When the names changed to Viera, Shepard, Patrick, Castroneves,
It was'nt the same for me so they won't be getting my dime.

And Vukovich. And O'Connor. And Sachs. And Bettenhausen. And the growl of the Offies, and the scream of the Novi. And the voices of Tom Carnegie and Sid Collins. And Pat Vidan waving the flag and doing his dance. Yep. I miss them, too. ;)

Langhorne. The killer circle. That place claimed a lot of them.

For many years, the next race after The 500 was the Rex Mays 150 at West Allis, Wisconsin.

I'd watch it but I'd just get PO'd at all the morons who won't rise or remove their hats for the N.A.

I agree with you Chuck. I used to work for a company that made race parts so we had pit passes at Michigan International Speedway. I have pictures of all those racing legends. After the split I quit watching and I've never got excited about NASCAR.

There is a race on both Saturday and Sunday this weekend in College Station, The Lone Star Grand Prix hosted by the Lone Star Region Sports Car Club of America.

Oh never mind you were talking about left turn racing not real racing.

Hate to tell you this but neither of them won the Indianapolis 500. Rex Mays and Ted Horn ARE among the 5 best drivers not to win though!

Haha,
Yeah watching a bunch of guys driving around playing follow the leader in a parking lot with no passing and no speed.
Time to trade up from your BigWheel maybe ???
Come to Indy some day and see where real men used to race.
You won't go to another airport or downtown area with cones to see an open wheel race.

I'm not talking about solo, and speed is not something that is lacking when the Formula Atlantic or GT-1 cars take to the track.

Your talking about indy cars when you say follow the leader. Road course racing requires one to think and plan. It makes you use tactics and skill. Anyone with enough money to buy a seat can go left, left, left, left with their foot on the floor.

There's a real race the same day: F1 at Monaco, through the streets of a semi-medieval town with the buildings all made of rock. Not a good place to make a mistake. It's the only 'through the streets' race I know of. Unfortunately it comes on the Speed channel at 4:30 AM, while Indy is on at about 2 PM.

Yeah, Just watched the race on TV and there we're over 30
lead changes. Better check your facts dude.
I guess it's good they have a Formula Atlantic series for drivers who don't have the "Stones" to go over about 120 mph.
But it must be really cool to go out and watch those cars follow the race leader all day going up and down hills and around hairpin turns........
Like i said come to Indy and see some real speed and racing.

I used to enjoy watching racing. I really liked Indy, etc. Nowadays, I just cannot get interested in NASCAR. No offense intended to anyone who enjoys it. We all have our own preferences. But, I just don't care for it.

I really liked watching racing, but TV coverage makes it look like a parade.
Are there no dirt tracks anymore? NASCAR was a lot more exciting when the Stock Cars were real cars, Sportsman, Modified Classes on short tracks!
