A blast from the past:

As I recall I bought my 1911 replica from their Popular Mechanics ad sometime around 1953-54. Seems it was a bit less than this figure. For those who haven't figured it out the "Dept" in these ads corresponds to the magazine they ran in, PM in this case. Always wanted the whole set of these but never got around to it. $3-4 was a bunch of money to a 9-10 YO kid in those days!
